TV claim update
Moorron - 17/6/11 at 12:43 PM

Hi guys need some advice again on the above, to refresh

On Feb 7th this year i knocked my plasma tv over and after never making a claim on my 10 year old policy with legal and general house insurance i went thru the hoops to get it sorted. It wend downhill after i supplied photos and the original reciept (i keep everything) and it took me to chase them after they never picked the TV up for inspection 6 weeks after they said they would.

Then it took over a month to get back to me and say the claim is refused due to 'wear and tear' of internal componants which made me angry as my tv was working fine but 4 years old so it must be worn. From then and upto today i have been in the arguement stage with them constantly telling me they trust the engineers but not telling me any other details. In other words they 'think' my tv btoke and i then threw it and tried to claim which has made me really angry as im not this type of person.

So ive now gone to the complaints department and made a very nasty letter asking them to explain why its took so long, why i have nothing in writing about any of this and also how they have using a 'wear and tear' comment from and engineers report to not paying out for the tv. Also to top it off i wasked for the tv back to do my own report suggested by them to how i can appeal. The tv was brought back to me with addition heavy damage so i was really annoyed. I also got them to agree to send paperwork out and 6 weeks went by and nothing so now ive just got off the phone with them overturning the decision but i want to know if i should expect compensation for all this trouble = 4 months of ignoring me, lying and making things up?

I will be contacted next week to have an offer for like for like on my old tv and nned to know if i am in the right to ask for this?

GRRRR!

Not nice having the trouble but probs best just being satisfied that you can now claim and put the hassle down to experience.

It must be hard for the ins companies to weed out the fraudulent claims from the genuine ones. Maybe the only way they can get 50% of the claims verified is to play hard ball. unfortunately a lot of innocent people will just accept the first statement and not fight then be left out of pocket.

i used to go for the accidental cover on the house insurance, the first time i tried to claim for a broken laptop screen they turned the claim down on the same grounds that it was brake then i broke the screen to get a new laptop. i wrote them a nice letter saying the laptop still works if you plug it into a monitor. they said no it didn't, surprise surprise when it come back it didnt work at all. ended up getting an independent inspection which proved that they hadn't put it back together properly and they finally paid out.

i no longer pay for accidental damage cover as its not worth the piece of paper that is written on. by the time i had paid for the independent report and all the messing around on the phone and writing of letters i could have just got a second hand screen off ebay and fixed it myself.

Can't help, but in the past we had an item damaged, rang to see if it was covered and found out it would cost us more if we claimed so we didn't.
Next year the premiums went up. Rang to ask why..... and was told that it was because we made a claim. Disputed it and was told that as we had rang up about damage it was classed as a claim. Told them to shove it after that.

Did they give you the money for that claim? If not then they're charging you for a claim that, by their own admission, they either haven't paid out for or never existed

Has anyone mentioned going to the Financial Ombudsman ?

I think you have to go through the company complaints process before you can go to the FO. You have to give them a chance to settle your complaint before the FO will take it up. The complaints procedure should be clearly listed in the policy documentation somewhere.

yeh i was going to the ombudsman next as all they say is you have to let the company have a chance to solve the problem. I think L and G know im not going away and with more than just the claim to complain about they will get told off.

I have asked in writing a letter informing me of the claim refusal, engineers report, complaints proceedure and appeals proceedure and i was told this would be done yet 6 weeks later still no post, then the complaints person said she has a copy of the letter infront of her hinting they had posted it. She asked me if i wanted a copy and i said yes and it should have arrived today at the latest but instead i get a call telling me they are paying up. No post so she hasnt posted it 2 days ago like she said she would = no letter she is lying!

I wanted an appeals letter so i know exactly what i have to do, they have told me over the phone to get an engineers report but thats it. So as far as im concerned im an engineer so i will do one myself but i bet top dollar they then tell me i cant so thats the main reason, clear instructions how to appeal.

Ive never claim on house insurance before so dont know the routine, but i think im having it bad with this lot. I have had to chase at every stage, get refused, have my tv back with additional damage, complain and then get lied too so im abit mad that after 4months of winding me up they think 'just pay the min out he will go away'! or atleast how i think it is.

They havent answered my main points of my complaint letter, just overturned the claim and i was sure to play them at their own game on the phone and not actually say im dropping the complaint so im still wondering if i should keep them going so they cant class it as a compliant solved.

Will see what they offer, my TV was £900 4 years ago, a 42" 720P plasma, which you can get for about £450-£550 now. I have handed the original reciept to them so what will i get??

Purely based on my own experience, you'll get another year of them promising to pay you, and then they won't, because they're not paying you, and if you give them 14 days to do something twelve of those days will be taken in them scratching their backside and THEN they'll claim another 14. Then you'll take it to the ombudsman, trading standards, whoever and they'll do less than you're doing....

Now I've said that they'll pay up and nothing more will be said

A mate of mine had a house fire recently, fridge freezer mullered the kitchen, all electrical appliances in the house had to be replaced due to smoke damage, he had new for old cover, his TV was a very expensive set when he bought it, admittedly a few years ago, so the loss adjusters gave him the cash equivalent of a 28" CRT, basically feck all.

Hope you fair better, as this is a different case but I'd expect the worst and you may be pleasantly surprised.

Regards

Geoff

My dogs ripped up my carpet so i thought i would claim on the insurance as i had pet damage cover. Turns out it would only be covered if it was someone elses pet and not my own. Insurance a huge scam

Accidental damage cover can be good. I've got my place insured with M&S. My wife dropped the metal extractor filter onto our brand new £600 induction hob, next day an insurance assesor came out, 2 days after that an engineer came with a replacement and fitted it. We just paid the £60 excess. AND my premium did not go up the next year.

But you can imagine the amount of dodgy twats (I've known a few) who purposely knock over their plasma onto their laptop, DVD player and anything else they fancy getting replaced.
