Replacing water pump + belt, Vauxhall Nova
Alez - 29/7/04 at 10:27 AM

Guys,

I've been asked big €€€ for replacing the water pump of my Vauxhall Nova + replacing that important belt I don't know the English name for (it's the one you want to replace before it breaks because it failing would destroy the engine). The pump and belt are cheap but they charge quite a bit for replacing them. Is either replacement something I may think about doing myself? Does any take a lot of time? I have basic tools only and zero experience with engines. What would you recommend? (My interest would be learning more than saving to be honest, I would use the saving as an excuse for myself really.)

Cheers,

Alex

what year and engine size,if its 1.0 sincle ohc they are a doddle but the pumps do rust in positon and a large hammer and chizel may be needed to remove them

It's a single OHC 1.2 litre...

Cheers,

Alex

Alex,

Do you mean the cam-belt? Drives the cams, valves, etc.?

No it's the seat belt, stops you going through the window when the engine seizes because the water pumps f%*ked.

Yes! Cam-belt, that's the one. I've been given some advice in a Spanish forum and don't think I will be trying to replace it myself though

(If I needed one seat belt for each likely failure that car can have including water pump, I would need a couple of hours to fasten them all..)

Cheers,

Alex

Put it towards a workshop manual and some tools and Swarfega. Get stuck in there.

Alex,

I knew way less that you when the head gasket went in my MK2 Golf.

I stripped and rebuilt the head and did all the belts at the same time with nothing more than a Heynes and the odd question to the odd mate.

Just get the timing right and it's easy!

James

I've got some mates like that too James . Call Haynes as much as you like, they do help a lot of people and are well worth the cost.
