newbie mk questions
rizla - 29/7/04 at 07:49 PM

ok here goes due to getting shafted by rs jigtec im thinking of taking the plunge this time with mk on a turn key mk indy and have a few questions
1 is a car engine or a bike engine best in this car
2 is it wishbones on the rear as well as the front
3 will i fit in it(should be number 1)im 6ft 3
4 how long does it normally take for them to biuld one
5 do they handle well
6 am i doing the right thing

HELP

zetec - 29/7/04 at 08:16 PM

1) Try both and see. My choice is car engine as easier to live with in normal use, but will cost more to get the same performance as bike power.

2) Yes

3) Yes, I'm 5"10 and loads of room for me.

4) 300-500 hours to do a decent job. Well worth doing as you will learn more than you can imagine.

5) Yes

6) Hard to say...Get to have a go in as many as poss. Lots build only to find it is not what they thought it would be. For me one of the best things I've done!

Staple balls - 29/7/04 at 08:17 PM

1) probably depends what you want
2) yep
3) yeah i'm 6'4" and wide, fit ok
4) no idea
5) no idea
6) depends if you want an mk turnkey really

macspeedy - 29/7/04 at 08:18 PM

go for it!!

if you are thinking that much about it you should really go and and see their operation for your self and get a test drive, to answer a few of your questions yes wishbones front and back, well mine is, yes you will fit in it, i'd say it handles extremely well even from my limited experience with mk's. The engine choice is up to you but if i was to do it again i would go bike engine it just seems to fit the idea that colin chapmen had in the first place ' build in lightness! '

hope that can shine some light on the subject.

nick205 - 29/7/04 at 08:19 PM

1. What do you want from the car?
A car engine will be fast, smooth and easy to drive and good for long drives.
A bike engine will be very fast, more difficult to drive, hard work on long drives, but more fun on a track.

2. Double wishbone suspension all round which offers good ride as well as handling.

3. Yes!

4. Don't know, but it will be worth it.

5. Like you would not believe and then some.

6. DO IT NOW! MK are very nice people and make an excellent car. Plus there is an ever groing MK following to share your enthusiasm with.

HTH

Nick

By the way I'm building an MK if you hadn't realised and I'm very pleased with all aspects of it and MK so far.

rizla - 29/7/04 at 08:27 PM

i guess its a case of going to visit them
my idea is for them to build it for me so i have no idea how long it takes them

rizla - 29/7/04 at 10:07 PM

snoopy i shall indeed be up to see you in a couple of weeks time do they have demo cars so i can see wot i prefer car or bike

Petemate - 29/7/04 at 11:19 PM

Ooohh Rizla!!
I didn't know you visited this site. It is quite interesting, and I really wish I'd have gone down this road before I got my RH. These boys are really good, and having been to one local meet, the BEC I saw was the NUTS. I want one.
From what I've seen at the shows the MK cars are excellent quality, and the guys on the stands very helpful.
Once I aspire to the dizzy heights of finishing my RH, and running it for a while to get some enjoyment from it, I intend to go down the MK route, with one of their fine chassis and a bike engine.
Best of luck mate
Pete(Oldgit)
P.S. having been out with Gary Sanders of Dax in their 'Busa demo, I can tell you it is bloody quick. My lad is building one, half the weight of my 2b and twice the power.Dribble...Dribble...

alister667 - 29/7/04 at 11:21 PM

The other folks have answered most of the questions OK but I have to weigh in on the Bike Engine thing.
For a high performance lightweight car a bike engine is fantastic. The whole 'hard to drive' / 'tiresome on long jouneys' thing is overplayed in my opinion.
Assuming you get the gearing correct (ie high enough) a bike engine is grand to cruise about in for long journeys. The 6 speed sequential gearbox alone is worth it. Now I've done 1200 miles in mine in the last 6 weeks I am so glad I went BEC. I would strongly advise you to go for a spin in both types to see what you prefer.
All the best

BTW you ARE making the right decision!!

I think they call it Formula Garbí, right? Am I guessing right that you are doing this for Cobra Cars Spain (formerly MG Motor Emporda) in Gerona?

Cheers,

marktigere1 - 30/7/04 at 11:06 AM

Is the copper on the right saying: "Who exactly were you being chased by Mr Rushdie?"

Hellfire - 30/7/04 at 11:10 AM

If you are thinking of going up to MK on a Saturday, let us know which one and we'll make sure we're there to take you for a spin in a BEC.

stephen_gusterson - 30/7/04 at 11:21 AM

isnt the indy called just that cos its all round independant suspension?

ie wishbones, not live axle or de-dion....

john_p_b - 30/7/04 at 12:59 PM

WTF?!?!......woodster i just been looking through that thread about MK too and was just thinking exactly the same thing!!

seems memory loss is a terrible thing for some ppl

[Edited on 30/7/04 by woodster]

stephen_gusterson - 30/7/04 at 01:52 PM

strange

in the thread

Troubles at MK

mr rizla claims to have been told to 'fcuk off' by MK but he wants to go there and buy a car now.

or, could rizla be trolling for info (yes) and in the aforementioned thread, slagged off MK for the purposes of promoting RS Jigtec
(?)

woodster - 30/7/04 at 01:54 PM

VERY STRANGE

JoelP - 30/7/04 at 02:47 PM

well, at least he says he got shafted by arse jigtec!

maybe he was a genuine customer of the jiggers at the time. then again it was alledged that pork pies were being eaten at the time...

was jigtec the same as SPD or is that my memory fuddling things?!

rizla - 30/7/04 at 04:49 PM

im the first to admit when im wrong, and boy was i so wrong i lost the best part of 10k in jigtec, andafter speaking to many people mk seem to come out on top in many aspecs,so after much soul serching and eating much humble pie il go where the best come from

rizla - 30/7/04 at 05:08 PM

i would add that the coments that were made about mk were unjustified and i am truely sorry at that time i was very much brain washed and pro rs jigtec, but after being fed so much bullshit from from them i came away with nothing and very bitter i am now glad to say im a wiser man for the exsperience

john_p_b - 30/7/04 at 05:51 PM

rizla, just to clarify here, did or didn't martin tell you to f**k off when u asked about running 2 bike engines?

respect for admitting you were wrong but if (as it seems) it never happened in the first place then why say all that stuff?

woodster - 30/7/04 at 06:25 PM

another lie????? whats martin or mk ever done to you ........... i still dont understand why post that sh*t

rizla - 30/7/04 at 06:32 PM

no it DID happen but it was not the main man after seeing his photo in a car mag it was not him(from his maner i assumed it was)as he portrayed himself as the owner

i have no reason to tell lies here or anywhere else,it seems i jumped to the wrong conclusion, and am now paying for wot i see as a mistake,if i could take back the comments made i would do,but i cant all i can do is apologise if i have caused offence to others i am truly sorry

i put myself at your mercy

stephen_gusterson - 30/7/04 at 06:35 PM

good idea steve ..... new user name .......RIZLIAR

rizla - 30/7/04 at 06:49 PM

i have indeed deleted wot i said in the other thread, but i dont think coming back as a new user would gain much respect and that would be cheeting,i face up to my failings and my wrong doings and dont run away from them
so rizla i will stay, and take wotever is thrown at me

stephen_gusterson - 30/7/04 at 07:19 PM

so, perhaps you should ask your question again, and see if MK builders can answer in your 'second chance' scenario.

rizla - 30/7/04 at 07:48 PM

ok,my basic qestion is my needs are for a seven car for the road but more than capable for the track,so wot do people recomend i know mk can be light so assume this would be the best are there any other makers ie budget not dax rush money about 10k turnkey

JoelP - 30/7/04 at 07:54 PM

respect for the honesty rizla. shitt happens, move on people! its too short a life to hold grudges, or even to be a miserable git.

as i always say, worse happens in war.

rizla - 1/8/04 at 12:19 PM

wasnt me........i was the most suprised to see the posting, but it was a welcome one

JoelP - 1/8/04 at 08:54 PM

someone posted a while ago as MK, responding to a thread called 'sprocket adapter, you're having a larf...' maybe that was another employee though.

Hellfire - 2/8/04 at 11:57 AM

Rizla, offer is still on for a spin in a BEC. Let us know if/when you'll be there.

j30fos - 2/8/04 at 01:56 PM

I had an R1 Indy, which was quick, handled well and had loads of room in it. I now have a Megablade not as quick :-( but bloody hell it handles. If you get an MK spend your extra money on wheels/tyres. I had 17" wheels with toyo proxes ( look spanking ) now I have 13's with yoko a048's front and rear anti roll bars and no matter what I do in a corner they grip bloody well.

I dont think you will be disapointed with an MK at all.

Is it home timie yet, I want to go out and play :-)))))

rizla - 2/8/04 at 02:42 PM

hellfire,il defo have a spin il give a bell soon, thanx to all for your help and the artical says it all rearly dont it

OX - 2/8/04 at 07:11 PM

lol jfos ,every one tried telling us about the 17" wheels ,i was glad i went for them becouse i thought it looked the dogs danglies and still handled ok,but like you ,this time im going for smaller lighter ones

j30fos - 3/8/04 at 07:09 AM

Just wait until you feel the difference, before it used to be a case of can I get around here now it is a case of how much faster around here can I go :-)))))

OX have you got your kit now :-)))) big smiles I guess
