

They were lucky ... Old two stoke diesels are notorious for running out of control when they start to run on their own crankcase oil breaching the
rings. Without the injector pump governor controlling revs they will spin faster and faster until they destroy themselves.
The only way to stop them is to stuff wet rags into the air intake. If you don't know this just run in the opposite direction.
I have a 5 cylinder 27 litre two stroke diesel in one of my boats. I always keep a bucket or water and rags handy.
A place I worked in the 70s ran a 2 stroke Foden lorry and the engine on that used to scream, you could hear it from a mile away.

And that is a large propane cylinder it's kicking around as well. I'm just glad the sump never landed on the valve....
