I did a return trip from Penzance to Bristol in a 2.0 HDI 806, the thing only did 28mpg, probably a bit more economical is driven slowly, but I never did get the knack of that!

vw bora 1.9tdi PD 115se 6 speed is what I've been pondering. they are around for £7k though you have to look. it is low on insurance too. the 130 and 150bhp modesl go up on insurance groups a bit.

The peugeot/citroen hdi engine is ok, but I found the 110 unit in a 307 a bit of a disappointment. 307's do handle well though. You'd get a very nice late 306 dturbo in hdi form for £7k or less.

I've also driven the new focus 115tdci which was quite nice, though not sure it'd be down in your price bracket yet.

Ned.

Don't rule out a Volvo S40 1.9td. 50mpg all round.

7k will get a very nice example.

phelpsa - 3/8/04 at 10:20 AM

Get a Volvo, then the police won't hate you when your speeding. We have a Volvo V70 D5 (probably a bit out of your price range) but it can go from 30-70mph in 8.0secs (faster than the T5), it'll average 45mpg and it can tow 2-tonnes (the same as a LR Discovery). That shows how well volvo build diesel estates.

Shame you are in Scotland Drew, my mate has a Focus for sale here in Bristol. Here is the text from the autotrader web site.............

2001 FORD FOCUS Hatchback 1.8 TDi CL 5dr
Metalic Black. Anti theft system, Central locking, Electric windows, Passenger airbag, Driver airbag, Ford 12 spoke Alloy wheels, CD player, Climate pack (heated front screen, mirrors & air conditioning. Excellent Condition. 28000 miles. £6900.

It's a really nice car - like new.

BMF - 3/8/04 at 10:34 AM

I have a company 5 door Golf Mk4 TDI 130 6 speed.

I drive everywhere at 90, and still have averaged over 46MPG over 10,000 miles! On a trip I get 48-52 MPG.

Bloody quick as well, superb car!

Anything with a VW 1.9 PD engine in it.
They're as strong as an OX and reasonably economical with it - I average a whisker under 40mpg with permanent 4WD. I believe a 2WD manages around 50 on average.
Bear in mind that a tow car has to be fairly substantial in order to tow a car trailer - you don't want the tail wagging the dog.
This of course leads us the inevitable conclusion that you want a Passat PD130 4Motion - obviously, cos I've got one.
But It's a bit of a culture shock after a Scooby, so I imagine not :-)
Anyway, you're welcome to epxerience mine with the trailer and car on the back if you like.

PS. If your car is standard - I know, most aren't - the VW PD130 engine makes 15lb/ft more torque than yours does - 229lb/ft. It comes in at 1900rpm as well.

(I get the feeling I trot this out to everybody - must be trying to justify myself )

My current car is a subaru impreza 2.0 turbo
There we go colin

I like the vw gt tdi and the audi a4 tdi.
But im not sure.

Keep them coming

Drew

chriscook - 3/8/04 at 06:29 PM

Esso's!!!

Seriously my 306DTurbo goes significantly further on a tank of esso diesel than any other - as much as 10%. Safeway's comes a very close second and is much nearer to me than the nearest esso garage - it's probably supplied by Esso.

(sorry - went a bit off topic there but i thought i'd throw it in anyway!)

Rob Lane - 3/8/04 at 06:40 PM

Trouble is most of the above don't come near £7k price range as a newish model.

get something good next time

Howz about a nice Isuzu Trooper, say mid 90's version, approx 38 MPG and will surely tow the kit around. I get that kinda mileage with a 2.8 TDi trooper engine in an old Rover....

I run a Nissan Almera 2.0D on BioDiesel! (Veg oil)

Runs a treat. Smells like a chippy though.

But at 77p litre, who cares!!! (Bl**dy tax man. Should be less than 50p ltr!!)

stephen_gusterson - 4/8/04 at 10:03 AM

whats the point when real diesel is 81p?

timf - 4/8/04 at 11:34 AM

send it down this way steve i'll clone it and send it back

ned - 4/8/04 at 11:37 AM

can i have a copy tim?

Ned.

timf - 4/8/04 at 11:39 AM

of course you can ned , just send you bank card and pin number so i can macke a backup of it for you

marktigere1 - 4/8/04 at 12:01 PM

The point of using BioDiesel is that its better for the engine.

It lubricates the injection pump better than Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel.

Hence, engine should last longer and my money goes to a local firm rather than the middle east.

stephen_gusterson - 4/8/04 at 12:21 PM

so, all those additives in normal diesel to improve burning and leep injectors clean etc, can be replaced by simple raw veg oil? or are the same additives added?

Id need to be pretty convinced if I was gonna put that in a car I was paying for.....

atb

steve

marktigere1 - 4/8/04 at 12:54 PM

The main point about BioDiesel is its not raw veg oil. Adding that stuff will cause problems due to its viscosity. BioDiesel is waste veg oil that has had the glycerine removed by a process called 'Transesterification'.

A 5% blend of BioDiesel to ULSD has an EN950 rating as per 100% ULSD fuel and can be used in any engine. Studies have shown engines, injectors etc are cleaner than with ULSD.

Not experienced that myself, but I am driving a car that has a net CO2 emmision of zero. Can I therefore have a reduced car tax bracket Mr Chancellor???

I would not advise anyone who has doubts about the fuels use in their car to use it. It leaves more fuel available for my everyday transport

marktigere1 - 4/8/04 at 01:05 PM

PS. If you travel to France and fill up with Diesel, you will be adding 5% BioDiesel without knowing!!

Thats all they sell. 100% is available from the pump in Germany as well!!

The word is spreading
