Just need to clear out a few things and am wondering how much a skip is to hire? Would only need the normal one (think that's 8' )

Its going to be general waste, washing machine/fridge/bed/wardrobes etc.

About £250 down here
Borrow a mates estate car, few trips down the local tip, bobs your uncle. Not even sure you can put a fridge in a skip these days, the tips seem to have a special area to process them.

About £160-£180 up here.
As the man says...........no fridges.
Some charge extra if you have it for more than a week and some are very slow to pick up a full skip.

Tips usually charge vans and double axle trailers but not single axle, that's my preferred method.

Indeed. My local tip has started refusing trailers over 4' in length. Seriously considering chopping mine down (currently 6'. the next one takes no trailers at all. At the moment have to travel 5 miles to take a trailer full, but I reckon the fridge, w/machine and wardrobe would be one trip. Very worthwhile.
Saying that the local pikeys will normally have a washing machine. Worth a few quid in scrap.

Last skip we got was about £120 in York - from Martins of York if they cover out as far as you.

£120 up here mate. I put the washer at the top of the drive and wait..... it does a very effective vanishing trick in under 10 minutes......

Then you could have a big hooray bonfire on the front garden with the wooden furniture!!!

tips are still fine in west yorkshire, so hopefully north yorkshire would be fine still. Only rule they have here is that vans, pickups and trailers are only allowed weds and sat, to make it easier to look out for trade waste.

Washingmachine will disappear from the end of the drive before the day is out, the fridge can be moved by the council as its controlled waste, free or £10 usually. The wooden elements of the furniture will burn, or go to the tip with the rest of it.

No point paying more than you need!

I got some quotes for a builders skip (7 yard with drop down bit to get in - normal skips are 8 yard).

National companies wanted 170 to 200 quid.

Local company wanted 120, dropped off when i wanted, collected a couple of days after I called and happy to leave for more than a week. This was about a month ago.

You won't be able to skip a fridge due to the gasses - but your local tip should take it.
