Better snow plough, Mower or quad?
sdh2903 - 10/10/11 at 07:37 PM

With winter just around the bloody corner again, I was thinking, what would make a better base for a plough, a ride on mower or a quad?

Mower has turf tyres so would need changing for nobblies but does have lower gearing.

Quad already has the nobblies but higher gearing.

Would either have enough weight or traction? I just bloody hate shovelling snow, and seeing as though i live on a hill and my drive has a ridiculous slope on it I'm exploring all my options

i cant imagine either would have much grip once the snow has fallen. I use a stiff brush rather than a shovel, provided you havent compacted the snow its very effective. How about a spinning brush on the front of a quad?

I tried both. The lawn tractor fitted with chevron rear tyres was ok until the snow in front of the blade built up. The quad was tons better cos you could get a bit more speed and momentum to keep the snow rolling off the plough. I'm working on a snow-blower to fit the lawn tractor....

Good point Dave! She was pregnant last winter so maybe she should take her turn this year!

I see the point about traction, however the last off road go kart I had only had turf savers on it and it refused to get stuck anywhere, i had it through 10 inches of mud, sand or snow, granted it wasn't pushing any snow but surely a decent set of nobblies would cope?

Having tried a ride on mower over here in big snow I can confirm you will have very little grip. The diff just lets one wheel spin up straight away while the wideish fronts just push the snow until there's enough there to stop the mower.

They are useful for clearing powder snow though. Take the grass box off and get the blades spinning and you hoover up the snow and send it flying out the side. Just avoid your wife with the snow 'jet' though...

A live axled quad ideally with some front tyres on the back will have heaps more grip. And if you're running on private land you can screw in some studs which help a lot. Just avoid spinning them on tarmac as they don't like that.

4 wheel drive quad is awsome in snow. you need alot of weight on it though E.G ME!!!!
