Heating my conservatory
McLannahan - 15/10/11 at 10:02 PM

It's really cold in there during the winter months and with it rapidly approaching I wonder if the collective have any ideas?

There's no carpet in there - terracotta tiles. Can't afford to install at present

There's no radiator in there either. Too expensive to install and we have microbore system

Would a heat convector type heater be too costly to run?

Thanks all

How about a gas bottle-based log burner ? Make it from scrap , scrounge some wood , and its free heat !
Thats what I'm doing for my workshop...............

we have a small electric convector in ours. Quite a large conservatory, very small heater, but its enough to knock the chill off. Yes it takes an hour to feel it, but it does work. its small, about 8 inches high so sits on our very low wall with no bother.
If I were you I'd get one from Argos, try it and if it works great, if it doesn't, well its only £30.
We have this one...

I'd go log burner option if I had a conservatory.

Which I haven't as theyre too cold in winter, too hot in summer.

So IMHO they're a bit pointless

One thing I was meant to do this summer was line our roof with the reflective foil tapes. It reduces heat in the summer, but its also meant to (very slightly) insulate and retain heat in the winter.

we had a conservatory at the last house and heated it with an oil filled rad. Heats up fairly quickly and did more than just keep the chill off and there pretty cheap for 1.5kw

I've got things like this, wall mounted. Only addition would be a timer to get them on before we get up - there are some with timers built in.

Thanks all - will get going sorting something for the coming weeks!

Importantly, when and for what do you use the conservatory?
Little cheap 2kw fan heaters are quick to heat an area, but no electric stuff is cheap to run for long periods of time.
Ours houses the washing machine, tumble drier and the bikes. And in winter the gas barbeque. I may, one day, try to improve it. Just may.

insulating the floor will help a little, unless you always have slippers on! Id aim for a nice carpet and underlay, with a small oil filled rad to warm the air.

In fact if it were mine and i were a single man, id just kingspan two of the walls Sadly the wife doesnt like that idea...
