Wasp Nests!!!!
Surrey Dave - 8/8/04 at 07:11 PM

Any good DIY anti wasp information would be handy at the moment, how can I get rid of the little wotsits without calling in the man with the white powder?..................

theconrodkid - 8/8/04 at 07:14 PM

smoke them out(puts them to sleep) then remove the nest.
then call ambulance and get rushed to hospital with wasp stings if ya got it wrong

Peteff - 8/8/04 at 07:22 PM

Can you get at the nest? We had one in the garden ages ago. It was underground so I burnt them out. Pour in petrol throw match and run. I hate them to the point of phobia.

Surrey Dave - 8/8/04 at 07:28 PM

I think its about 8 foot up a tree , just behind my blinkin' shed, and they give me the shites too Pete.

Have got water containers with marmalade on the shed roof but it could be a long job.............

theconrodkid - 8/8/04 at 07:34 PM

get some smoke pellets like chimney sweeps use or i got some tobacco that will flush them out

derf - 8/8/04 at 07:37 PM

last time I had a problem with a wasps nest in a tree I dropped some gas in a garbage can, and poked the nest out of the tree with a broomstick, as soon as it hit the garbage can I dropped a match in. It was actually quite entertaining for a bit whatching all the wasps that were out doing other stuff come back and catch on fire and fly around.

Avoneer - 8/8/04 at 07:40 PM

Had one under the soffit outside bedroom window. Tried everything to no avail. Called in the guy with his powder - £40 and all wasps gone in 30 minutes....
I'd say it was worth it...

Chris_R - 8/8/04 at 07:48 PM

Set a small fire around the foot of the tree. That should do it

theconrodkid - 8/8/04 at 07:53 PM

12 bore?

bob - 8/8/04 at 07:57 PM

get as close as you can with a high power pressure washer

Surrey Dave - 8/8/04 at 08:01 PM

You guys trying to get me hospitalised.........

macspeedy - 8/8/04 at 08:11 PM

just buy the white powder and squirt it in the holes as long as you don't agitate the nest you should be ok!

Viper - 8/8/04 at 08:14 PM

i had one underground in the garden, one of the bastards declared war by stinging my little girl, i poured a litre of optimax down the hole followed by a match, all those that were flying around i nuked with a can of wd40 and a lighter (instant flame thrower)
Tim

pbura - 8/8/04 at 08:17 PM

Can't you buy spray insecticide for wasps and hornets? Comes in a can and shoots 20 feet or so, can buy it just about anywhere. Used it on a giant hornet nest and it worked great. They were some hurtin' cowboys

Either that or slather yourself with mud and climb the tree with a vat of flaming oil

steve wheeler-smith - 8/8/04 at 08:27 PM

I had a nest in my garage loft. I used spray brake cleaner, Very affective!!!

theconrodkid - 8/8/04 at 08:50 PM

vipers idea sounds best,i did that to my ants nest

Hellfire - 8/8/04 at 08:55 PM

My brother had a nest proliferating in his cheeks (not arse or face - but dormer! ) He got some stuff from the local Pet Shop - he asked one of the "boys" (get it?) "What have I, what have I, what have I done to deserve this" come on, sing along!!! He got some brilliant foam spray especially for wasps nest's, for about a fiver. I don't know if it cured it, but it looked like it worked well. Shoots about 4m with a hell of a force!
I'm sure he'll report later - when he's back to work!
Was bl**dy hill-airy-arse watching him trying to hit the "incoming" with a foam 4m foam spray shot - think he thought he was Spiderman!

colibriman - 8/8/04 at 08:59 PM

HOOVER THEM OUT.....

blueshift - 8/8/04 at 09:00 PM

when I had a nest outside my window in norwich I called the council, they had a bloke who came out for a tenner I think it was and nuked them with the white powder pooter.

r3nuf - 8/8/04 at 09:01 PM

Powder did it for me too. Had a million of them in my porch soffit. Within 30mins.....no sign of them!

Bought the powder from the garden centre for a couple of quids.

B#starding things!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My wife got stung on the neck last week, she had a very bad reaction and ended up in casualty for 3 hours. Scary at the time.
Happily paid £30 for the nest to be removed, and the quote from the chap was "f#ck me,it's hornets"
Never one to miss a selling opportunity I stock electric fly zappers which fry the buggers........

Mark Allanson - 8/8/04 at 10:03 PM

Do they kill flies as well? We have a real problem with bluebottles at this time of year, and daddylonglegs in september, its all the fields so close to the cottage.

robinbastd - 8/8/04 at 10:08 PM

Excellent for flies and even better with daddylonglegs as there is more to burn!!

JoelP - 8/8/04 at 10:34 PM

i, in the distant past, made a flame thrower from a butane lighter refill can, with a small funnel stuck on the end (the trigger) and an empty biro in that (the nozzle). Twas a bloody dangerous device, 8 foot flames. I reckon that would sort it...

dont blame me though if it goes 'wrong'

stephen_gusterson - 8/8/04 at 11:01 PM

same here a week ago

35 quid and about an hr later no more.

I wouldnt f*&k with wasps, they are not good humoured things.

Are products like Raid illegal in the UK?

We found several yellowjacket nests under eaves this year and one in a rhodedendron - the largest nest was the size of a soccer ball - but a thorough dousing with the spray can decommissioned each one.

We also had some paper wasps (their nexts have an open hexagon structure similar to honey bee combs, and something else (hornets, maybe?) that have nests underground.

Fortunately, a developer is buying our property and will have to deal with nature's little wonders when he levels the house and starts digging around after the first of the year.

At our new place, we've enjoyed hanging yellow plastic traps. There's no poison in these - you put an attractant oil inside, they fly in through holes in the bottom, but aren't smart enough to leave the same way, so they dehydrate and die. This kind of trap only works on yellowjackets, though.

Hellfire described a product that sounded equivalent to Raid (and other brands) wasp killer.

Bought it at a PET store, though? Guess that's no crazier than my buying it a drug store, er apothecary

thekafer - 9/8/04 at 02:06 AM

Sounds like a can of "Start Ya Bast@rd" is in order......

marktigere1 - 9/8/04 at 08:33 AM

I'm sure someone on here would lend you a welders mask and gloves?

Do wasps nests conduct current for a MIG?

chris.russell - 9/8/04 at 08:58 AM

try just going on holiday for two months until the cold weather comes, no more wasps and one hell of a sun tan!

ned - 9/8/04 at 09:04 AM

we have anest in our garden shed. it was on the ceiling until one day when i shut the door it fell on the floor. it is now a lot bigger and is growing on the sofa that is being stored in there. tried ot get the mower out 2 weeks ago and got stung. so sofa friendly inside shed remedies? which is best!

Have a look here to see how one guy sorted his wasp problem...not necessarily recommended!

Colbriman....where did you get the hoover idea????!!!

stephen_gusterson - 9/8/04 at 10:50 AM

thats a good thread - funny if you are not a wasp. I will give that a try (suitably attired) if i get any ground based wasps. mine was in a wooden window facing, with an entry hole underneath - hard to get the powder to stick!

what I liked was posters on scoobynet make me look like a novice

for example

MikeP - 9/8/04 at 01:23 PM

Serious answer to the question - I have to be serious because I have a horrible phobia of wasps and hornets...

Foaming hornet & wasp poison works great - they die instantly when they touch the stuff. You can shoot it from 10' away, cover the nest, then move in close to squirt it right in the openings. They don't come back. The poison washes off and you have a souvenier ala "The Shining" if you dare .

One can is good for 2 or 3 nests and even I could do it...

drmike54 - 20/8/04 at 02:35 PM

I haven't had any problem with wasps until yesterday. My son yelled at me "Dad the dog is biting something!". So I went outside to see what was attacking the dog and saw she was covered by about 10 wasps. I then heard my son yelling because he was stung and then so was I. I went in the house to take care of my son and get him calmed down before I rescued the dog. Got the dog cleaned off and calmed down and in the house. I asked my son how he was feeling and he said "Better" at that exact moment a wasp that had been hidding in his pants stung him on his leg. Today the exterminator came out. The nest is under the siding of the house so that eliminates the pour gasoline down the hole and burn them up method. Oh well $125 gone again.

stephen_gusterson - 20/8/04 at 03:14 PM

as a rule, i dont kill anything. The exception are wasps and flies. Wasps are evil little bastards with no purpose in life.

Flies laid eggs in the flesh of the dog I had as a kid and lived under the skin as maggots. The dog had to have a load of flesh scooped out to get rid of them.

enjoy your tea

Petrol works very well as long as you're quick. Pour it in and have an assistant ready with the matches. Quite a panic sets in when the petrol goes in and they'll start swarming around the nest so it's important to do it quick. Those ones will be covered in petrol tho so that sorts them out.

Your problem comes when the ones that are 'out' come back to find their nest on fire so make sure you retreat as soon as it's alight.

Both times I've done it we put about a litre of petrol into a bucket and used that to deliver it to the nest. Cans take too long to pour - you really want to be pouring it on and legging it!

Failing that, I've heard that meths based windscreen washer concentrate in a 'super soaker' works well and can be used from a distance. Give it a good squirt first, then a squirt with a flame applied

Got one under my window at the moment. Got some rentokill wasp nest destroyer fast action foam. Just shake and spray form about 2m away. If you can see the nest just cover it, if not just get the holes where they are coming out of. Best to do it in the evening though, when most of them are in the nest. When the others try and get back in, they die when the touch the foam.
Ive had to do it a few times though as it keep on raining after i have sprayed it.
I had a hornets nest in the same place last year. one spray did the trick.
Best thing about it is you dont need to get close, they dont know where its comin from.
