Has anyone any idea how to stop these people ringing you up without giving them any details.
They look like a Debt recovery company.
They want name, date of borth etc etc.
This is NOT going to be given out, as I am not sure if its a scam or whatever.
They are plaguing my father in law who is 86, and doesn't owe anyone a penny and is Ex directory as well. (Dont know how they got his number)

IF its a genuine company and not a scam. Then only scenario I can think of is someone either gave them a false number, or the company wrote it down wrong.

Even if they are legit, they should be putting all this in writing. Not deluging people with calls, to which they will not explain until you give them name DoB etc etc etc. There si now way they will be given any information at all.

I was wondering what the team think?
All responses on how best to deal with this would be appreciated.

Wife used to work for them many years ago. Yes they are genuine dept recoverers, fairly brutal, and based in Fleet, Hants.

To be fair, they need you to confirm your details for the data protection act as they cant speak to anyone but the person involved.

I definitely wouldn't give out my date of borth, that is sacred!

First step should be to register with telephone preference service, that should stop 90% of unsolicited calls if they originate in this country.
Second would be to register the company/number with telephone provider as a nuisance caller.
Third would be to contact the police and report the "threatening phonecalls"

If they ask for your DOB, ask them to tell you what they have on record as your DOB and you can confirm the legality of the caller.

I had a similar problem and after about 10 calls asking for some bloke who I hadn't heard of - I established that it was a legit company and gave them my details (I had previously refused to even give them my name) the calls stopped straight away.

Another approach might be to ask the company for their details then write to complain and threaten them with legal action for harassment. This approach worked with 02 mobile who were harassing my sister for money which wasn't her debt.

True call stops unwanted callers.

I moved into a repo house and got the same number back that they had and its been a pain ever since.

now the automated system blocks the numbers they call from and you program it with your families numbers which go straight through...

the others are screened using voicemail style screening. if you dont like them just block that number and they cant call again.

the other way is to write a letter and tell them not to call.

if they call the house and you advise them this is not the correct number they shoudl by law stop calling.

They rang asking for my brother-in-law who has a few debts.

He has never lived with us or had his mail sent to us, so god knows why they rang us.

Promptly told them we didn't know his current address and not to ring again in such an aggressive manner (which the guy was).

They haven't rung back but if they do I'll threaten with legal action.

There's another call blocker available:

CPR All In One Blocker

Simpler and cheaper than True Call. Seems to get decent reviews - I've just put an order in as we keep getting 3 - 5 calls a day from Indian scammers ("IT department here - we have detected that your PC has viruses" - sure, I use Linux - but I don't open any debate with them) - these come up as "unavailable" in CLI so BT reckon that they can't block them. We've left them to the answerphone to date, but we're getting fed up with them - apparently this device is able to block them.

In your case, when you get a call from a specific caller you just press the button on the top. After that, all calls from that number are blocked (it has a memory big enough for about 100 numbers).

We have now resolved this situation.
They had a different person living at that address. Thats strange as my outlaws have lived there for 40 years!
