I know a guy who hillclimbs an AX 1.1 in the >1100 car engine class and is very competitive so they're not that bad.

Adam

JoelP - 20/8/04 at 07:21 PM

mine is a mint example, 15k miles when i bought it. did someone really say it only weighs 600kgs?

phelpsa - 20/8/04 at 07:23 PM

And if you clean the air filter, cut the baffles out of the silencer and use shell optimax you can get a whole 52 horses

Adam

JoelP - 20/8/04 at 07:26 PM

Chris_R - 20/8/04 at 07:34 PM

I have a 2.0 ltr Cavalier GLSi. I get nearly 30 MPG. Wow! Better than the Golf GTis I've had. They only got about 20 around town. Not quite as quick though.

It's got a Bonrath badgeless grille, Grille spoiler, replacement Weber with K&N panel filter, manual choke conversion, clear indicators and clear repeaters. £350 ono. Oh, and two rovers, but you'd not like them. No one else does.

mangogrooveworkshop - 21/8/04 at 12:10 AM

A 2.3 ltr White TRANSIT REAR WHEEL DRIVE comes with a diesel card........and goes faster in all gears including reverse. Uses only the most expensive oils/fuel. Floor is designed to double as dustbin/floor. Tyres are disposible as they get replaced for sidewall damage from all the nails and screws left in the yard by the installers. The racks are spaced to allow the transportation of plasterboard and 8x4 ali sheets. The suspention is designed to climb pavements and drive on to verges to enable you to, not walk too far. Quickest thing in traffic first rule of the road .....white van always gives way to another white van.......it works!
Swimbo drives a dented mondeo cause she aint good at reversing! nice smooth Zetec in it........with a personal reg L2TES thats getting transfered sometime to the next one.

1999 Ford Puma 1.7. Cracking engine, handling and gearshift and decentish economy.
Would have had an MX5 1.8 but decided I couldn't live without a usable boot.
I'd quite like an RX8 or 350Z in a few years.

scoobyis2cool - 21/8/04 at 02:11 AM

I used to drive a 1.8 sierra until I knackered it practising my double-declutching technique. (Note to self - sierras do NOT like going into 1st gear at 50mph). Didn't really bother me as i was only getting 18mpg! Ripped some bits off to use as spares for my indy and sent it to the car graveyard

Generation 1 Honda CRX

Old enough to rust, not old enough to be considered a classic.

I like it though.

If that's off the road for any reason, one of my rustbucket Minis.

Saab 9-3 turbo convertible - was written off (Cat C) by previous owner in a double side swipe, can't complain - was cheap to buy and reasonable to repair. Mint once again now. Looks great but rolls like a ship on std suspension.
My Mrs has a 'sheep in wolf's clothing' 1.9 BMW Z3. Looks the part but you have to really work the engine to get some go. Not much can touch it on bends though, very sticky, very small for me (6'4". I need the roof down to poke my head out of.

jollygreengiant - 21/8/04 at 08:54 AM

Work car - peugeot 406 diesel turbo complete with taxi sign.

Home - Vauxhall Omegod 2.5V sex (Sorry 6) auto estate over all mpg = 24 not bad considering wife drives it during rush hour from Rushden to Kettering.

Jasper - 21/8/04 at 09:20 AM

Volvo T5 Estate - poo off a shovel, eats front tyres, 23mpg on a good day, still pulling at 140mph on the autobahn, and I can fit everything I own in the boot!!!!

The Mrs drives a tatty N-reg Mondeo, promised her a better car if she can go 12 months without a dent - my money is VERY safe

No, they came out mid 80's I think. Not the nicest looking thing but its pretty fast. It'll do 130 and it's pretty fast accelerating if you keep it over 4k revs.

Only cost me £350 which is nice.

Looks like this only mine is a dirty white with rusty arches.

mackie - 21/8/04 at 12:01 PM

Skirrow,

Does the CRX have the 1.6 twin cam 130bhp engine (ala 216 GTi)?
They are pretty nice motors by all accounts.

ChrisW - 21/8/04 at 12:14 PM

I will be driving a '95 Pug 306 Cabriolet, lowered onto 18" alloys, phase 3 front end, doors, bumpers, rubbing strips etc filled and smoothed over and running a 3.0 24v V6 from a 406 Coupe.... when I get it back from the paintshop!

At the moment I'm driving a very clean '87 XR2 which runs an American 1.9 CVH block bored to 2.0 on Webers with all the bits you need to make it quick. It's in desperate need of a run on a rolling road and I've got a nitro setup to go on it when I get round to getting some more injectors!

Chris

Didn't know it was in the 216 Gti, but it sounds like the fella.

1590 DOHC

It's a fun car to drive but it makes you work for it. As I say, until about 4k revs nothing much happens. Nice induction roar when the power does kick in though, probably thanks to the giant ram pipe and bucket sized airfilter the previous owner put on it.

Shame it's front wheel drive but it does the job for my daily driver.

Jim - 22/8/04 at 06:51 AM

52 plate Civic Type R. Not quite as fast as the Mk Blade but it will do for a road car. Looks nice, excellent engine and Gear change. sometimes get 27 mpg!!

Jim

marktigere1 - 23/8/04 at 08:24 AM

Nissan Almera 2.0 Diesel. Very economical and very slow

Also, Rover 216 GTi Twin Cam. Yes it does have the same engine as the CRX. Goes like a rocket over 4500 rpm with a fantastic engine noise. Handling is fantastic as well. Getting rare so I hope to hang onto it for a while.

Cheers

Mark

mackie - 23/8/04 at 09:01 AM

People with loads of cars:

How do you go about insuring them? Can you get policies to cover you full comp on any car you own (maybe up to a certain value)?

Skirrow - 23/8/04 at 11:58 AM

I do something which is possibly not 100% legal but nobody has actually managed to come up with a reason why not yet. If anyone can think of anything it will be appriciated as I'd like to know before I fall foul of the law.

Basically, my 1litre mini is insured on a policy which allows be to drive any other car, 3rd party, as long as it doesn't belong to me.

So, all my other cars, belong to, and are registered to my girlfriend, hence I am insured on them all!

The only is problems I can see is that they are 3rd party only, none are worth that much though. The only other problem I can see would arise if the car was parked in a public car park and the handbrake failed and the car rolled into someone or something. As I wouldn't be driving it would not be insured.

andyps - 23/8/04 at 12:42 PM

I think your problem is that if the car is not insured in its own right, it is illegal to park it at the side of the road and leave it unoccupied. I am sure (but may be wrong) that there is a law which requires insurance for this. You are OK, however, whilst driving.

The other issue is, how do you tax the car if it is not covered?

One way round covering lots of cars is a motor traders policy but I gather they have got very expensive recently. The other solution is a fleet insurance policy - where a company insures its fleet via one policy - don't know how easy this would be to organise as an individual though.

[Edited on 23/8/04 by andyps]

marktigere1 - 23/8/04 at 01:12 PM

I believe that any car you do not own but drive third party, MUST have insurance of its own (by the owner of that car).

Brother in law used to sell insurance and I think he told me that once when I wanted to do something similar for the current Mrs Tigere1.

But don't quote me on that. I'll try and ask him when he gets back off holiday.

Cheers

Mark

ChrisJLW - 23/8/04 at 01:57 PM

Mk1 MR2 with one or two 'tweaks'
15" 6-spoke alloys, Whiteline springs & KYB shocks, Induction kit (cheap n home made but better than K&N IMHO), s/s exhaust, TRD head gasket (running 200psi compression on each cylinder) & more in the pipeline.

I really must start saving up for the Locost!!

dave1888 - 23/8/04 at 02:26 PM

53 Primera estate not very fast not very economical and not very spacious. From next week a citroen berlingo

ned - 23/8/04 at 02:33 PM

306 turbo diesel. never gets driven as i commute on the train top speed is 100mph though which is nice and safe for the license (unless you're going down hill)
must get the fuelling twekaed some time...

I did actually ask my insurance company before I started doing this and they said that it was legal but they didn't recommend it as you are illegal as soon as you stop as andyps said. I don't really trust the view of someone in a national call centre though as they will tell you any old crap in my experience.

When I was to tax it I just insure it for a short time on my policy, last time it cost me £19 for a month which isn't bad. Lucky really cos the day after I did it I got a puncture and a passing copper asked me to produce my documents as it was showing as having no insurance. Although I would have taken my document saying I'm inusred on any car 3rd party, I felt a lot more comfortable taking the certificate with the right reg on it!

I think I'll maybe do it properly next time round to save the stress, whats the penalty for driving without insurance anyone?

'02 ford focus TDCi 115. Great little car and i've never had it below 50 mpg - no matter how much the girlfriend seems to try. Its quite fast for a oil burner, especially when the turbo kicks in although the brakes seems a little under rated as theres drums on the back and tiny discs on the front

Have taken it to France twice so far this year including 4 adults to LeMans towing a trailer tent and we wer all OK despite driving non stop each way (just me driving!). If you need a big car I would really recommend one.

AFAIK its 3 or 6 points. plus the car gets crushed if you dont insure it, or confiscated til then etc.

i used to have a traders policy, it was £2k for the first year but after a claim went up to £3.5 for renewal. Needless to say i didnt bother renewing it. Swapped my insured car 12 times that year! AA do 2 weeks free overlap so you can still have a few on the go at once. For the few unlucky moments when you get caught out, i had memorised a mates details, who had a traders policy.

My mates insurance company told him that to drive someone elses car 3rd party, the vehicle needed full comp to cover any damage to their vehicle - after all, they could sue you if you busted it.

wilkingj - 23/8/04 at 07:13 PM

Late to the party this time!..

I run a '84 12 seater land Rover, Turbo Intercooled Diseasil. (85mph with a 1 ton caravan on the back, and a 3.8 metre boat hanging on for dear life!!
Its great for driving in traffic using Rule One... If its bigger Give Way!

Its handy for putting all my stuff in the back, and what wont go in the back goes on the roof, like a 40ft Mast etc!.

My Other vehicle is a ... Guess What!!!...

A Land Rover, the 12seater (County) is a bit on the new side, so this one is a H reg, and that's old H, ie 1970, no tax and £77 per year insurance fully Comp. Its my toy... and its for sale.

My other other vehicle is a Locost... only a chassis and a pile of bits at the moment.

My other other other vehicle is a 1954 Matchless 350cc bike, all in bits and stashed in a cupboard in the garage under more junk and bits of locost!.

Last but not least is SWMBO's Nissan Micra, our newest car on a D plate '87/88.

Thats it..

Best Regards

Geoff

Keen on the old K series even though they are prone to the odd hiccup-bit more interesting than a car that runs with no probs all the time?!!
In all honesty after 5 400s have decided will have to get something reliable (german?) next time but then the grass isnt always greener elsewhere? Is it?
