OT - Gardening: Strawberries and Tatties - Locost Solutions ?
mcerd1 - 24/4/12 at 12:18 PM

Way off topic, but that's nothing new for me I'm looking for your best locost ideas for my garden...

I've got a couple of bags of seed tatties and about 30-40 strawberry runners to plant out, but my garden isn't ready for them and I've not got time to make proper beds for them
So I'm looking for the easiest and if possible not totally ugly things to plant them in - but it must be cheap!

So far I've got a couple of plastic drums to cut up (45gal.), an old tin bath and maybe a few old tyres

any other ideas ?

We used a bin... Just make sure you have a good layer of stones for drainage..

Weirdest post award...

Erm - buy some grow bags or hire a rotavator and spend half a day preparing the garden?

I can borrow a rotavator any time, but I've got a issue with lots of concrete and tree roots to come out first
also scottish power want to dig up half of it in the next few weeks for a power cable - so I'd rather have things I can move

potato tyre stacks?

rotavators blow

Tyres or potato bags for potatoes as said. And you can get nice patio strawberry pots (plastic) which have lots of holes for the runners. Work well as well.

Go and get some planters from B&M stores

When faced with a similar predicament, the solution cost me £350,000. Not so locost...

I heard a story about guy who grafts tomatos on to potato roots , he gets both crops from the same plant.

If it any consolation you are not only with horticultural problems, my plum crop has been hit hard by the freaky weather I will only get a few plums off the Victoria trees this year although the various other types should not be so badly hit and it looks like I will get a good crop of apples.

Strawberry's grow anywhere like weeds, put them anywhere theres a bit soil.. BUT, if you want the fruits keep them covered cause birds love them!

well I know that tatties and tomatos are related, but you wouldn't want to try that with early tatties like I've got or you'd get no tomatos at all

Raspberries easier to grow than strawbs, just a bush.
