why did team sky make froome slow down in yesterdays stage when he broke the pack. he looked like he could have gone ahead ande took yellow jersey. are they just competing to help wiggins?

Yes, that is exactly what the team are aiming to do. Wiggins is seen as the only one with the chance to win and the tem has been built around him. Their only aim is to get Wiggins to the finish wearing the yellow jersy !

Apparently Froome is no good in the hills, so has no chance of winning overall.

Team orders in play there, Froome was on the telly sawing Wiggins was the strongest hope of winning the whole tour (very diplomatic of him)

It's Wiggo's overall strengths , especially the time trials, where he is the best.
Second to last stage is a time trial. All they have to do is get him either in yellow or a few seconds behind on that stage, then he can win overall.

The tour has always been a team sport. Every winner of the tour has always had strong support from the rest of the team and that often includes riders that at some points appear stronger than the team leader. The team leader is selected because he is the strongest rider over the whole 3 weeks. Wiggins has to be in a position to react to every move by his main rivals and will reserve energy wherever possible.
It is not possible for any rider to win the tour without the support of their team.

Officially from the team... There had been discusion at breakfast, of Froome attacking at the end (to gain time on Evans and force him to chase) so he was probably expecting the order to go. The crowd noise made the radios hard to hear (Wiggins says his had fallen out). Seans Yates said on the radio "Slow" as they caught the group but Froome thought he said "GO".

However, nothing is streight forward in a 3 week tour and there's endless scheming goes on in the team cars. Froomes attack served several purposes...
1. If he'd got away then he'd have distanced himself from Nibali (and Evans) in the GC and reinforced his second place. It's a classic move to attack a rival/s as you catch them and so he went as soon as the junction was made. If he'd opened the gap and Nibali hadn't reacted and stayed with Brad' (I've known him since he was a junior) then he'd have been told to keep going. As it was Nibali reacted so it served no prpose to continue and reduce Brads lead so he sat up.
2. It was also a chance to see just how well Nibali (and others) is going.; Very well as it happens but every effort tires you over a 3 week tour and Nibali had to make another one for n gain.
3. It also raised the prospect of internal competition at Sky; The other teams are now thinking they might start attacking each other... and wait to take advantage... and wait... and wait. Riis (manager at SaxoBank/Tinkoff) has said today he thinks leadership at Sky is about to change, so the doubt is there as to who to mark... It'snow to Skys advantage to play up to that.
