I'm just ready for doing the very same thing Joel... whats the best thing to put down on the floor for the ahesive to stick to. Made a mistake once in the bathroom and used MDF, the relatively smooth surface and flexing made the tiles lift. Now I'm relaying them... need some good advice. Good flexible adhesive and decent substrate to lay them on.

in this case it was 5mm ply straight onto the floor boards, screwed firmly all over every 8 inches in squares. thats a lot of screws! i used flexible rapid set adhesive. if the floor moves the grout will crack eventually. not the end of the world, but just do as much as you can with the floor to prep it. Make sure all floor boards are firmly screwed down, check the ply for flexing, then cross your fingers!

ps, when you grout it, make sure you press it into the cracks firmly, then it will also go under the edges of the tiles and ensure maximum support all round.

A few years ago i did 140 m2 for my house with 16 cm x 16 cm tiles.
I HATED THAT JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did kitchen, laundry area, hall, and a toilet in my house a few years ago, about 600sf.

When I went to buy tile, ceramic was half the price of vinyl so thought I'd give it a go. This area's like a rabbit warren, and with counters and recesses has something like 23 corners, so I borrowed a tile saw, which worked great. Scoring and breaking was faster on the straight sections. The big bummer was grouting, which seemed to take forever.

The final product was well worth the effort. It insulated the concrete floor very nicely, and feels like a million dollars under bare feet. Only wish I hadn't used light-colored grout, which was a pain putting over the dark adhesive, and takes a lot of scrubbing to get really clean even though I sealed properly.

I hate grouting.. I did a wall for my niece, they'd taken the old tiles off and I had to skim it first so it turned a nice easy job into a bummer. Fix'n'grout for me every time.

i make the grout just runny enough to pour it out onto the floor and work it in with the float! fast and easy that way. the slowest bit for me is using the electric saw to cut tiles for every nook and cranny, and of course getting the ceramic shards out of my eyes...
