
I'm just trying to get the electrical supply sorted out for my project house.
The Quote from Powergrid says
It says 12KVA distribution capacity but under the Load Requirements it says it is for:
Lighting and general power
A water heater circuit and immersion heater element
An electric cooker circuit
Heating by fuel other than electricity.
So is this 12KVA supply going to be adequate given that it says it is not for electric heating?
I want to be able to weld and use a 2 post lift etc. in the garage

For some reason there is an expectation that a welder pulls loads of current. They generally (up to 150A) don't. And even then only for short
periods with breaks in between.
A decent kettle pulls just as much, a shower 3 times the amount. So fret not. Likewise lifts, they are usually about 2hp motors IIRC (could be wrong
by a factor or two there though) but that is only 1 1/2KW.
You will be fine!
So is a 12 KVA supply the same as a 12 KW supply then?
Assuming my O level physics hasn't changed i.e. Watts=Amps x Volts
I had discussions with friends who are electricians, one domestic and one high voltage delivery they came to the conclusion that even though I was
adding 50% volume to my house I was unlikelly to exceed the main fuse rating unless I turned absolutely everything on and added kettles and electric
heaters.
I can run 2 1/2 Kw studio lights off a 13amp socket so a welder or a car lift as long as its not 3 phase will be fine.
I would think you could be pushing it if you had 10amp shower the kettle and the toaster on at the same time though
My dad lets bedsits (has done for 50 years or more)
One main 100A fuse feeds 8 bedsits (all with little cooker, leccy heating etc) plus an electric shower (the others run off a gas multipoint)
My point is that lot runs off 100A incomer, so a normal house will be fine.
And yes, I believe KVA is the same as KW. Sounds like a 55A incomer for you. Seems small, but shouldn't be an issue at all.
Its incredibly hard to blow a main fuse. By which i mean, you cant without trying very hard. Ive seen an entire house with two showers bodged through
a 40a mcb (when they moved the board they left the 40a in the old board feeding the new one) and it had apparently never tripped.
A 60a main fuse will take 100a for a while without popping, and many high demand events are only short lived, be it a kettle, shower or maybe a plasma
cutter.

As a matter of interest, may I ask how much you have been quoted for this, as I am about to enquire about the cost to increase a 75KvA(3 - phase) to
150KvA (3 - Phase). Reply via U2U if you would like.

Feck me, thats quick work!
Last year I enquire about changing a single - phase supply to a 3 - phase supply! It too them 6 months to retuen with a price. I will add to this in
the morning.

Is this a house ? Normally supplies are now about 18kva. You need to take some advice as it. Needs to be properly calculated taking into account
diversity.
If the incommer is too small it won't get signed off.
