II picked up this in my trawl thru the South African papers....seems to be little reported here.....wonder why.? Are the journo`s on a payroll.

Not the Darling of the motoring masses

We all believe, but can't prove, that local authorities across South Africa
use speed-trapping more for making money than improving road safety but
Britain' transport secretary, Alistair Darling, has pretty much spilled the
beans.

His department wants drivers to stop using radar detectors, not because they
are dangerous, illegal, underhand or used to avoid prosecution by smartasses
who drive like hooligans the rest of the time but - and the department's
words...

"...because radar-detector users could be costing the British government up
to (the equivalent of) R360-million a year in lost speeding fine revenue".
Note the word revenue.

Now a clamour is growing for dear Darling's resignation (South African MPs
and government ministers reading this, stop sniggering).

An independent poll in the UK found that detector-users were 28% less likely
to be involved in an accident than a non-user and now Mark Cornwall, who
runs a mail-order auto-parts company that sells radar detectors, has taken
on the government to prevent the banning.

He says Darling's main agenda is to raise cash from speed cameras - and he's
out to prove it.

He said: "A detector is a road-safety device; a lifesaver that helps the
motorist keep within the law and ultimately saves him from being banned.
That's bad news for Darling and his tax collectors."

Attempted communication with Darling has been unanswered.

Cornwall - and thousands of drivers - wants Darling to resign and be
replaced by somebody who really cares about road safety or he'll go to the
European Court of Human Rights.

Better buy a radar-detector then quick!

I had my car stolen from outside the house 4 years ago and never even received a visit from the police. I had to phone them back for an incident number to report to my insurance company. Disgusted was the least of my reactions.

My burglar alarm went off one weekend.

My elderly next door neighbour rang the Police who said it was an unregistered alarm and would switch off in 20 minutes

My neighbour then went round the house finding that it was a false trigger. What would have happened if he'd found a couple of total scum removing items? Dred to think. He's a top bloke BTW
