Outdoor/garage lights
swanny - 18/12/12 at 10:39 AM

Hello all,

i'm after a way of turning on my garage lights from the kitchen (about forty feet) before i go outside. (so i can see where i'm going in the garden)

I dont want a PIR as we have lots of cats etc around and dont particularly want to run a cabled switch all the way down the lawn.

i've seen some remote control plugs at maplins here

which i thought i could stick in the garage window facing the house to activate a light (either internal or external)

would this work? any better ideas?

cheers

paul

You could mount a PIR, angled upwards so passing cats, won't turn it on.

the maplin remote switch should work, but you might want a remote control in the garage as well as the house.

I bought a very similar set to those from Asda in West Bridgford a couple years ago, they were only £5. Worth a try if they are still doing them at that sort of money.

Thanks Paul. I am in Ruddington so not far from Bridgford either. Always happy to have a natter with fellow local petrol heads.

We have a set of the remote controlled plugs for our christmas decorations, as the plugs are behind the tree. It's so much easier to push a button on the remote than have to reach behind the tree!

I'm not sure they've got a 40 feet range though, I've never tried more than about half that.

Remotes wont have the range.
I ran a bit of phone wire between house and garage, hooked up a 12 v relay and 12v power supply in garage, switch is in house, brings relay in and that switches lights on.
Oh and my burgular alarm also activates same relay so if alarm goes off Garage lights come on.

you can get swithing units that work off a text message, almost infinite range. Plug into 13amp socket and voila!
by Dad had one on his big static caravan, used to text the central heating 30mins before he arrived so it was toasty!
