fastest speed you've driven on the road
ned - 22/9/04 at 09:14 AM

of course we're referring to the local private roads in my area, officer.

foreign roads allowed, not race tracks though.

details of car you were in, location, time of day, conditions etc if you like...

mph as inidicated on speedo (no broken speedo's or exageration please)

Ned.

phelpsa - 22/9/04 at 09:16 AM

I knew this was coming.

stephen_gusterson - 22/9/04 at 09:20 AM

well, I suggested it

I think less specific details posted the better.

Statistically, there has to be at least one cop on here!

I've driven across Germany a few times!

Lightning - 22/9/04 at 09:40 AM

Jag XJ8 in France flat out

marktigere1 - 22/9/04 at 09:51 AM

Push bike.

Hanging off the back of a Lotus Esprit V8 on the M25.

Reached 145mph before I came off. Bounced twice landed on my feet and received a standing ovation from everyone in the queue on the left.

One bloke said I should have turned proffesional stuntman.

I said nah, earning sh*t loads with computers

Cheers

Mark

PS. The above is total b**locks!! Just don't think speeding on public roads is that great frankly. Seen too much carnage.

spunky - 22/9/04 at 10:02 AM

i may have alledgedly had an alledged indicated 165 on my Daytona with a gear to go, then I may have bottled it 'cos it was 'kin fast.... Alledgedly.

mackie - 22/9/04 at 10:22 AM

I may have allegedly gone flat out in a Civic Type R. ~146mph.
Private road ofcourse. Ahem.

bob - 22/9/04 at 10:23 AM

I was about 15 yrs old with my uncle in a lambo(dont askwhich but probably shite one)M4 betwwen heathrow and slough,no M25 then

I had 2 test drives of civic type R and on both occasions the salesman encouraged fast driving. One told me i should hold the gears longer and go round corners faster.

Mad car. Pussycat under 6k and fun between 6 - 8k.

not a car for long family journeys tho.

James - 22/9/04 at 10:56 AM

Late model Toyota Corolla that 'said' 130. Not sure if that's possible in what I thought was a 1.6 is it?
Was on a bit of private track that looked not dissimilar to a motorway.
Same goes for 2.0 Chrysler Neon.

Managed 150 as pillion(sp?) on a Honda Blackbird (my first time on a motorbike!). Not long after my girlfriend had been on the back of the same bike at 170.
Both were on privately owned country lanes around the Chobham area.

Foolish definately but an experience all the same!

DaveFJ - 22/9/04 at 11:28 AM

Cruise control on at 145 in my last Mitsi Galant

feet off pedals is bloody scary at that speed

And yes - I was on an autobahn in Germany,

the really scary bit was when i gat flashed to get out of the way of a VW Sharran !!! as it went past all I caught sight of was a G60 (?40) badge !!!!

fatstest Uk road ? well I'll admit to 115 - but i have already paid the price for that officer

Allegedly I have allegedly hit 135 allegedly quite regularly allegedly on a local entirely private road (belongs to one Liz Windsor) allegedly........Again in my current Mitsi Gallant

myhillja - 22/9/04 at 12:00 PM

Raced a '04 reg BMW 330i drop top (on a private track!!)on the way to work one morning a few weeks back, don't know about him but i bounced my '00 BMW 530 sport off the speed limiter at 155, and yes, i won, late on the brakes in to round about!

ned - 22/9/04 at 12:06 PM

James,

I've clocked 129/130mph (was looking at the road more than the speedo) in Sam's 316 bmw. I doubt very much I was actually doing that speed, most likely in reality more lke 115-120mph due to speedo inaccuracy/over-reading.

Ned.

Brooky - 22/9/04 at 12:09 PM

130 mph M42 southbound about 2 years ago in a mondeo summet or other. Passed a police car who started following, the pulled up along side, saw the fire service badge on the side of the car and backed off.
Isnt my job great.....................

john_p_b - 22/9/04 at 12:37 PM

in a dream.....

indicated 136mph in my 1.8 escort at around 6am on a sunday morning going to a car show.
book speed is only 122 on em though so i'm guessing that speedo is pretty far out at high speed.

also in another dream touched 150 in my bosses M5 which was on test drive listening for a suspension noise, forgot there was actually 6 gears in the damn thing though so there was more to go but those boring germans of course limit them to 155 so wouldn't have been much to get after that. never did find that noise though

vivid dreams

woodster - 22/9/04 at 12:39 PM

140mph in a ford capri 2.8i ..... in the 1980s ...... i wasn't driving but the guy that was, was pi*sed out of his head we were goin from a pub in manchester back to bolton for last orders .... the first bell rang we were back in a pub in bolton for the second bell ......... looking back now we were insane ......... a few weeks later we had a friend die trying the same thing ............ SPEEDINGS NOT BIG OR CLEVER

MautoK - 22/9/04 at 12:50 PM

Over 100 in a Land Rover, honest.
In the early 80s I had an ex-army Lightweight with an ex-P5B V8 and 3.54 diffs.
Ah, those were the days!

derf - 22/9/04 at 12:55 PM

fastest land speed for me is 170 mph on a suzuki hyabusa, on the NJ Turnpike at night with no traffic. the fastest in a car has been in a dodge viper 155 mph. Both scared the wee out of me, the Busa more than the viper, but I never plan on going that fast again, unless I compete in the gumball 3000.

In which case the nice french police will try to stop you doing it again by taking your car off you!!

alfasudsprint - 22/9/04 at 01:39 PM

Never again but....when was a bit younger and stupider did 130 indicated on A12 in a Fiesta 1.6S! Hows that for over reading.

Whereas the Marrocan police just give you a smile and wave you by

Hellfire - 22/9/04 at 01:50 PM

Skoda Octavia
BMW M3

145 in both... (Skoda was much better at it tho'...)

I don't recall either being in this country...

Philbo - 22/9/04 at 02:21 PM

Indicated 155mph in Lotus Elan SE (then with 220bhp) driving from Monaco to Italy about 2am nothing on the road. 2 up in car, roof down, not quite flat out (but probably nothing left). The only car we passed in 1 hour's drive was our mates, about 6 piled into a small Fiat. We stayed at the coffee bar in Monaco for a couple of extra espressos, passed our mates on the autostrada doing about 3 times their speed, then were well into our third beer by the time they all turned up. One of the mates was a carabiniero (one of the 4 kinds of Italian police), so in typically Italian way he would have sorted everything out if we'd been done. But this was in August and the police go on holiday en masse in Italy for that month. Really (everyone does).

nick205 - 22/9/04 at 03:16 PM

I've manage to get the speedo toread 140 in my Seat Leon Cupra TDi. This was down a long and very private hill, btu I'm not sure what the accuracy is.

phelpsa - 22/9/04 at 03:25 PM

I've been 130mph downhill in a MINI Cooper (120bhp) with 3 of us in the car which has an official topspeed of 124mph. Scared the living daylights out of the audi RS4 we we overtaking. But what do you expect, it was Tim Harvey's older brother driving.

Adam

dave1888 - 22/9/04 at 04:35 PM

120 mph on the M8 between j1 and j2 in a golf tdi. apparently

Deckman001 - 22/9/04 at 05:20 PM

135 on an RG500
and the same in a v6 mondeo
I think the mondeo had more left in it tho

Jason

Jasper - 22/9/04 at 05:39 PM

Just over 140mph in my T5 Volvo on an autobahn a couple of months ago - felt solid as a rock - had my mum in the car and she didn't even flinch!

In the UK never go much above 85mph as it's just not worth it - get my jollies on the track.

subk2002 - 22/9/04 at 11:55 PM

135 on my old honda cbr 400cc
147 in my subaru there was still more in it but my bottle crashed

OX - 23/9/04 at 12:52 PM

very fast on a busa,
and fast in a m8s m3,the busa felt smoother and was easyer to keep in a straight line at high speed than the m3 was.
if your used to driving at high speeds then its not scary ,but the diffarence between 150 and 185 is like another warpfacter

pbura - 23/9/04 at 03:57 PM

I've never had a car with much of a top end, or access to one on suitable private roads, so can't add to these tales of derring-do.

I allegedly hit 102 mph in a 25 mph zone once. Or, ah, it would have been a 25 zone were it not a private road

JoelP - 23/9/04 at 06:03 PM

i got over 140 in a 406 v6 auto, by the speedo. very refined even at that speed, but the wind is a bit much for it - the bumper started to hum.

i was once with an (ex)mate who did 120 in a 30 zone, at 2am. Scared the turd out of me big time. imagine someone pulling in front of you at that speed

i doubt i will exceed 90 again, havent passed 100 in ages now. As jasper says, theres no point. i already have 6 points and am (allegedly) swerving 6 more... plus i dont own a car that goes faster than 85 anyway!

scutter - 23/9/04 at 07:26 PM

I feel ashamed of my 120mph, in my 405 td.

But i did keep it up for over an hour on the M74 out of Glasgow toward Carlisle, and did the journey from St Andrews to Salisbury in a whisker over 6 hrs.( wife was in Labour).

Dan.

pbura - 23/9/04 at 07:46 PM

Should have qualified my earlier remarks lest I come off as a madman, barreling around on city streets or in a hospital zone...

It was a wooded parklike area in a ravine, with no access from either side. Twisty in some areas with a few straights, four narrow lanes wide, and very familiar to me as I drove it at least twice per day. The event transpired at 3 AM on a weeknight and not a soul was seen.

Really a fun drive, but I've grown up since then (about 25 years ago) and wouldn't do it again. Wasn't especially unsafe except to my license!

DEAN C. - 23/9/04 at 08:15 PM

About ten years ago we built a class 9 V8 Land rover special which I navigated for my friend in comp safaris, all in the north of England.Geared for 106mph flat out which we did regular,ON FOREST TRACKS!ten feet wide with trees everywhere!
IN A DREAM! I did 148mph riding pillion on mates X-UP Yamaha, that was terrifying.
In another dream last week did 155 mph in mates 2yo Porsche 911 superb handling and brakes
Also in another dream did 152 in a Celica supra as a passenger, very quiet and smooth.
Did an estimated 112 mph through Craner curves as a passenger with someone a couple of years back at Donnington in an Indy Blackbird!
At the same time my Mrs went round Donnington with MK in the original demo blade car(109mph through the Craner curves)she got out and said it didn't seem that fast!!!!
Only been to Germany once so I cant claim that one, strange dreams I've had though!!

stephen_gusterson - 23/9/04 at 09:27 PM

Mikey G - 23/9/04 at 09:29 PM

Indicated 165mph+ (i backed off then looked at speedo) in a chipped Sapphire Cosworth on the M4 on a Sunday afternoon. Was very silly at the time and i certainly wont do it again on the roads
Sold the car a month later!
Must be 7 years ago i think.
