WTD: Turbo Trainer advice
Wheels244 - 19/2/13 at 05:38 PM

Hello All

Nearly car related - turbo - anyway I know there's a few keen cyclists on here, could someone give me some advice on which Turbo Trainer to buy please and ones to avoid.
I don't want to spend a king's ransom on one but would rather spend a bit more than 'buy cheap, buy twice'.

Thanks

Rob

I used to have a Minoura RDA. It was rim drive so didn't matter if the bike had knobblies or slicks.
Sort of wish I still had it, sold it to Mango a couple of years back.

I've had a tacx sirius for years, cost about 125 quid but is holding up ok. To be fair i only ever use the easiest resistance, 53x12 soon takes its toll on the legs...

I have a JetBlack one.

It's not too noisy, it works well (even with the slightly oval wheel on my bike) and it's possibly the most evil invention known to humanity.

Seriously, I hate the thing. it's horrible, I've never felt a leg burn like it and in my youth I rode up snowdon, but it does what it's meant to.

I find mine so horrendously boring to use my advice would be whichever you buy find something interesting to do at the same time! And get the quietest one you can and use a seriusly slick tyre or your neighbours will hate you, even in a detached

I have heard plenty of warnings about using a carbon frame in a turbo trainer - i.e. it's clamped in an unnatural place and doesn't respond to the flexing/strain of turbo use very well. Personally i never use my carbon framed bike in the turbo, but doubtless there'll be people who do just that without problems.

Just thought i'd mention it!

Of course - having a dedicated 'turbo' bike is part of the journey to becoming a complete cyclist anyway.... :-D
