Tracker for Caravan
deeceee09 - 21/3/13 at 03:51 PM

Yes I know its sad to own a caravan but ours was stolen last month so I am thinking about security for a replacement. Does anyone know of a device I can put in a caravan that will alert (by text perhaps) my iphone when the caravan is moved? I know there are tracker devices available but you have to report the vehicle stolen before they track it and report it to the police. Not much good if you are out of the country for a week or so.

Either off the shelf solution which will cost, or as this is Locostbuilders....

PAYG mobile, activate some of the software you can get to track live. Then trickle charge it. You may need make / receive a call once a month to keep it live, but it then gives you (NOT the police) tracking details.

Or, something like an Arduino board wired up to a motion sensor linked to a transmitting device. Shouldn't cost any more than £100. Again powered from your leisure battery. And again, only tracked by you.

Yes, this can be done simply with a LOT less than an arduino board. The problem is keeping it legal on the transmitter side.

Just remember that if you use a radio transmitter you may need a licence from Ofcom which will not be cheap.
Also liable to a big fine if caught without a licence. (a non licensed installation is just as illegal, ie power and an aerial connected is enough to prosecute) I used to work in the office with the guys who did that job.
You will also need to be withing range to pick it up.

A phone would do the job, but has a cost attached to it.

Just buying a GPS tracker off the internet is not as simple as it sounds. Unless its a Phone based one.
Getting the device to find its GPS location location is the easy bit.
Getting that Data back to you is the hard / expensive bit. This is why the tracker firms charge a small fortune.
However you dont have £3million in Booze or Fags in your caravan!

GPS on a phone is good, but will need constant charging and a data allocation, as it would be sending its location several times over a 24hr period. So a trickle charge would be essential. The total data sent woule not be huge as its not like downloading web pages or films etc.

Unfortunately there is no simple solution that is cheap.

Arduino has boards that do GPS, phone and wireless so could text when ever the caravan moved out of range of your wifi.

Simplier solution is a phone on trickle charge that does the find me feature using phone masts - never 100% reliable location (ie it will be somewhere within a few hundred meters) but it should be good enough.

Parents PAYG phone needed topping up and using once every 6 months - so do it every time you wash the caravan or something.

If your out of the country who will track it???

Get tracker they just had an offer for £300 for the tracker an 1st year monitoring.

You can tell them when it's due not to move so they know if its stolen

You can track from anywhere in the world the tracked sends its location to your mobile which you can view via Google Maps, Google Earth, Open Street Maps
All done by text message,

You can do this using a phone running at the tracked caravan - but to work well it really has to be a smartphone at both ends with GPS as location via mobile phone masts is hit or miss, at my house the location found using mobile phone network alone is about half a mile out.

It is a lot easier just to go on ebay buy a simple cheap tracker which is really simple phone with can find its location accurately off GPS/GSM/GPRS.

Several different types on ebay here is one

We bought our first caravan last year, came with tracker fitted, first year subscription included in the cost of the van. On renewal this year, we were offered a life time subscription for £190, which can even be transferred once if we sell. Havingg a tracker also reduces the insurance premium.

PPC Mag did a test by hiding a phone in a car and then sending the Editor off to hide.....
The phone they used was a cheapy old Nokia wired to a charger and hidden up behind the dash. It was accurate enough in towns/cities as there were more masts to give an accurate fix and the country side less accurate but would get you to within 1/4 mile.

Yes!! Insurance is key solution to the problem, trackers might help you get any personal stuff inside if it gets nicked...
