Cutting hole in double glazed glass ?
Jon Ison - 31/3/13 at 10:43 AM

Have a set of french doors in utility room, fully glazed top to bottom, is it possible to fit a cat flap ? Obviously need to cut both panes of glass, is this possible ?

Might be possible but not practical as assume its a double glazed sealed unit? And would loose the seal and just end up with condensation between the two. Better to get a price for a replacement unit with required hole, will be heavy if size of a patio door but a diy job to fit

Even if you could it would no longer be a sealed unit, it would not be long before the inside
went cloudy and unsightly.
If it's toughened glass then you've got no chance.

Edit---- Too slow...again.....

My thoughts to be honest, think best is glass out and two new panels, glass top plastic bottom with flap in it ?

If its correctly installed within last 15 yrs or so it will be toughened as any glazing below 800mm above floor should be toughened. Its not only going to be sealed, it could also have special gasses (argon, krypton or xenon) to increase thermal performance, which would obviously all escape.

Yes you can get a cat flap put in double glazing. Ours is in our back door. You will need to go to local glass specialist who will probably make new door glass to your specification

I was under the impression that if you put a hole in one side of double glazing the pane would blow out, or possibly in dues to the gasses moving.

I have one....

They cut a hole 220mm round and tempered afterwards, it cost me £65 fitted and I fitted the flap on the evening when i got home. Got it done the day we had that minus 10 weather about 2 years ago, the wife wasnt too pleased when I got home late!!

Fitted a Sure Flap with scanner, You need to get the adapter plate (includes tunnel) for about £11
