PC woes
CRAIGR - 28/7/13 at 07:42 AM

For the pc gurus
My desktop has decided it wont boot up normally . I get some funny patterns on the screen on start up and lines through the windows header page and cursur then a blue screen with some randon stuff in the bottom right hand corner. In safe mode it works fine albeit funny lines and faint patterns showing and i can access everything i could before and am currently using it to type this. Done adaware and mcafee virus scan both came up with nothing .
Any ideas chaps ???

Sounds like your video cards tatered.
Cheers,
Bob

It sounds like a graphic card driver problem, right click Computer and open properties/device manager and look for alerts (exclamation mark) or look online for driver updates if you know the manufacturer and model of card.

As above sounds like faulty graphics card. Take it out and put it back in and try then.

They can move slightly causing what you suggest.

In likely to be the driver but you could uninstall it in safe mode.

Good luck

Hi Guys
Have no alerts or exclamation marks.
Card thingummy is an NVIDIA 7300

if its doing funny stuff BEFORE windows loads then its a hardware issue and cannot be a driver issue

(You could use a boot disk to confirm this)

There is a boot disk that tests graphics card memory that's free and does exactly what it says on the tin

A soft pencil eraser is a good safe tool to use to wipe the gold contacts clean

If opening the PC to clean and re-seat the video card - remember to follow anti static precuations

As others have said sounds like graphics card problems...but it could be your card is overheating, open up and get any and all dust out of the graphics card, also make sure the route of your cooling air supply isn't being blocked but cables.
Although once they start to overheat they are usually already well on the the way out.

Removed cleaned and replaced no change

Does your motherboard have a monitor output? have a look at the sockets on the back.

If it does then take the graphics card out altogether and use the MB socket

jossey - 28/7/13 at 09:21 AM

It wont be the monitor due to it working ok in safe mode.

I am sorry but it sounds very much like a hardware issue.

If you know anyone who has a pci express graphics card try borrow it and check it is the card.

the n vidia cards has 3 year warranties which my be still in date.

that said cards are pretty cheap these days.

Good luck with the resolve.
