seen them many years ago, home build machines that can either fly by ground effect our just take wings off and be a standard hovercraft

It's an Ekranoplane, not a hovercraft.

This is the early Russian one, known as The Caspian Sea Monster as it appeared on a US spy photo and nobody knew what it was:





They use smaller, modern ones in Florida around the Keys.

It does go ONLY 300mph so not as fast but should this idea not be considered further by Airbus Boeing. With modern engines and tech they could probably improve those states further.

the one at the top of the post is actually a hovercraft hence the skirt round the side, but the wings are removable so it can be two different types of vehicle. Its built from plans
