Electric Regs Advice Please
Macbeast - 12/2/14 at 01:08 PM

A friend has been told that she has to have her gas meter earthed. The meter is quite a long way from the distribution board. Would it be ok to run the earth wire to the adjacent cooker outlet or to a convenient sink ( which is presumably earthed ) or does it have to be wired directly right back to the Dis board ?

Also, what diameter of earth cable is required ?

Arent they usualy earthed to the gas pipe itself with a strap?

the regs have changed on this but are not retrospective. All services have to be bonded together and to earth at the point of entry into the building. used to be 6mm green/yellow sheathed I think its now 10mm and has been for a while. The gas meter also should be bonded across the inlet and outlet to protect an employee changing the meter.

better wait until a qualified engineer comes on before you take this as verbatim though as its many moons since i did this.

Cheers1

Hi the gas requires a 10mm earth cable from the main consumer unit to within 300mm of the gas isolator with earth strap with warning tag

anything else just ask , Jay
