Mulit point door lock help !
mcerd1 - 8/12/15 at 11:52 PM

My front door lock was never great, but now its too bad to ignore

I can just get it locked and unlocked, but the handle feels like its hardly got a grip of anything inside at all (if that makes any sense) and I'm more than a little worried that one day soon I wont be able to get it open and things will start getting expensive !

Its a FUHR lock that must be at least 15 years old, but it seems to be the same dimensions as the new ones

Can anyone recommend a source for a replacement one ?

Recently replaced 2 (for the first time!)
First one a rental where the lock could not be unlocked. That was a bit troublesome as the door needs to be opened first (took teh door panel out, then levered teh frame over enough to get it open)
Other one was at home where the return spring wasn't working so the door didn't latch.

I found both on ebay, all dimensions are provided and the only issue I had is I had to modify one of the long door sliders, turning a square hole into a slot. That caught me out!

I just bought the actual gearbox, reused the rest of the sliders etc and each was about £12-15 delivered.

Buy genuine if you can....

Downside to just doing the gearbox is you need to take the old one out first to make sure you buy identical. Put it back until the new one arrives...

B&Q / screwfix only have a couple of Yale ones, I'd ideally like to stick to a Fuhr one to minimise the things I need to change

It might be worth trying local double glazing firm's. Take the old lock with you if possible .

have a look at ironmongery direct

check the backset measurements, you should find a direct replacement

That includes a video on measuring up the lock....
Still found ebay very handy though, and much cheaper.

All sorted

cheers for the help, I'd only ever changed the lock barrel on these things before so I didn't really have a clue...

actually managed to get a new gearbox delivered the next day from the local locksmiths in the end (same price as most of the ebay ones), but it would have been a lot more difficult if I didn't know which dimensions were important

a broken little metal tag dropped out when I took it off the door (I believe this is a common failure)
but there may be a bit of an issue with the square the spindle goes through too...
