What would you buy with £2500?
donut - 3/2/05 at 09:19 PM

Ok if you had £2500 to spend on a 2 seat convertible that was small enough to fit a med sized garage and it has to be road legal...(No SVA!!) what would you buy?

Doesn't have to be a kit car!

dutton s3, use the change to max power it! well, not quite max, but certainly beef it up a bit, and give it a polish! its not as ugly as everyone makes out.

donut - 3/2/05 at 09:24 PM

Ahhh someone else who doesn't mind the dutton! Good value for money i'd say. Theres a nice one on Ebay with a 2.1 pinto in it! Theres also a V8 one on there too!!!!!!!!

Chevy Camaro. OK so its not exactly a 2 seater (its got 4 but I wouldnt want to use the back ones!), and its t-top... but they cost around £2.5k. Got to love that V8... I know a guy who had one that had been tweaked a bit. Sounded real sweet

Alternatively how about an old Jag? (again a 2+2 rather than a 2 seater)

That weren't much help was it?

that v8 just shouts BUY ME!! a lot of car for not much money.

im thinking of buying a dutton front end to use on the front of mine, to get it through SVA easily. covers all the exposed areas.

locogeoff - 4/2/05 at 12:29 AM

would have another spitfire, though I only paid £250 for the last one in the mid 80's, cheap parts easy maintenance fun car, wouldn't try to go too fast in one though, mind you after hitting a lamp post hard enough to push the radiator back into the engine shortening the car by a good foot and a half, I unclipped the seatbelt and stepped out.

donut - 4/2/05 at 07:39 AM

I always saw Spitfires and rust buckets! I hada friend with one once and it was yummy, but rusty. Another friend had one for 2 years and in that short time it disintegrated before his very eyes!!

A mk1 Toyota MR2 or a Mazda MX5 ?

Or dare I suggest a Fiat X19 ? (if you can find one)

hell, you can have my MK1 MR2 for 2.5k! At least it would actually get driven then instead of living in the garage.

Kelvin

donut - 4/2/05 at 10:28 AM

For £2000 you can get a really nice low milage T-bar Mk1 MR2 and Mk2's are not much more, infact Mk2's are bloomin cheap!

MX-5..hmmmmmmmmm nice!!

dern - 4/2/05 at 10:49 AM

Fiat Barchetta? I know it fwd but you'll never know a 1.6 mx5 was a rwd car... could barely tell with a 1.8 (zzzzzzzzz).

89 vintage rx7 cab?

TR7? Drop a v8 in it and off you go.

If you don't mind a t-top like an mr2 (very very slow ime) you could possibly get a 300zx.

Not much money for a cab unless you like astras or escorts.

Mark

Kelvin - 4/2/05 at 10:54 AM

of the MR2's go for a MK1. Less 'chav' value than the MK2 and a better drivers car as well IMHO.

MX5's are good also, but preferably with a Mustang lump in it.

If you do fancy a MK1, let me know as we're local and I can give you some pointers on what to look for.

Tin tops are easy... 944 (biased), 928, escort mk1 and 2, opel manta (stick a red top in), ford capri, early cortina, tr7/8, mgbgt, etc, etc and my personal favourite the gt6 which I must admit I'd bought instead of the 944 but the 944 is my daily commuter so probably a more sensible choice (relatively).

A mate has had one for 5-6 years and sure, you can get through that much fuel if you try, but on average he gets about 20-22. I didn't like the way it drives but then I'm not find of the remoteness that seems to be inherent in many japanese cars and I'm definitely not a fan of turbos. The rather hackneyed "a lot of car for the money" seems appropriate.

maybe i was trying too hard...

indeed it is a lot of power for the money, but i assumed that was due to the running costs.

I think that the market has been flooded with imports so that they aren't as exclusive as they used to be. You can pick up all sorts of japanese exotica for relatively little money these days if that's your bag.

I think the difficulty with any car like that is that if anything major goes wrong with it then you're looking at a hefty bill unless you can do the work yourself. I wouldn't run even a relatively lowly 944 unless I knew I could fix it myself... but then I imagine most people on here are equally capable.

Regards,

Mark

Only get the X19 if you are prepared to spend as much time under it as in it, I did this for nearly 10 years, I did love the cars but the constant welding, electrics, cables eventually got to me Rescued attachment DCP_0169.JPG

You get one of the old Fiat 124 Spiders for that money - used to really like those - probably major rust worries though

One here on Ebay:

Ebay

And it's local - Worthing. Left hand drive though...

Andy

I just had a thought, your getting us to look for your next car you lazy git

Peteff - 5/2/05 at 02:27 PM

That's a dear magazine you get there. I buy admags, costs much less and great choice of gear.

marcyboy - 5/2/05 at 03:42 PM

you northern folk would'nt understand the cost of living in the south

donut - 5/2/05 at 03:57 PM

Bob.... you rumbled my plan!! Bugger!

I would dearly love a Frog Eye Sprite but the pedals are too close together as my right foot completely covers both the brake and accelerator pedals so i would be going nowhere fast...literally!!

There is a girl up my road who has got a restored one and she let me sit in it. Very nice but as i said the pedals were too close together. Even customising the pedal layout would not work.

I think the MX-5 Mk1 looks a little like a Frogeye Sprite...if you squint!!

Jasp, that Fiat spider looks yummy! But lhd...naaahh
