help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mark H - 10/11/02 at 11:05 AM

Please........ someone help me...... I am Marks lonely wife and I'm now getting rather desperate! 'Him out-doors' has been rattling on about getting this "seven" for months. Then he got his dirty old sierra taking all the room up in the garage and blocking my path to the tumble dryer. I see no hide nor hair of him for weeks, then he emerges from the garage and says he's found an unfinished project that he's going to buy. And I am writing this as he's on his way over to pick it up and ws wondering if anyone knew how to tie a noose knot? I'm struggling with it a bit. Please someone tell me it's not all that bad...quick....before it's too late!

RachelH.

Viper - 10/11/02 at 11:26 AM

It will get worse before it gets better......but when it gets better it gets a lot better..

stephen_gusterson - 10/11/02 at 11:30 AM

well, my wife has coped fairly well with the 28 or so months I have been beating the crap outa steel to build mine.

Apart from the 'you spending money on that again' thing, there is also the 'you are spending more time with that than me possibilities'.

(Seem familair to anyone?)

You could :

1. burn the garage down and say it was an accidnet.

2. get the council to take it all away and say they must have got wron house.

3. run off with the council guy(s) who collected the car.

4. Learn how to weld and beat metal and help him out.

5. Bribe him with sex. (Thats the best option so far)

6. find your own hobby or see your friends on those nights.

7. make sure he keeps to the standard build - its faster.

the further forward the project hes buying the better for you!

any other options to add guys?

i got divorcedworse thing i ever did!

Spyderman - 10/11/02 at 05:49 PM

How does he get you to stay in?

I can't get any time to go out in the garage!
The wife beats me to it by going out shopping twice a day and leaving me babysiting!

She did say I would pay for those 4 nights of passion (4 kids)!

Bribing me with sex doesn't work any more!

As they say "fool me once; shame on you. fool me twice; shame on me". Fool me 4 times? Doh!!

Rorty - 11/11/02 at 02:29 AM

I agree with Steve Gusterson's # 6.
Get a life! Instead of whingeing, and drowning in self pity, explore what interests you, and then you can both follow your hobbies.
Just don't look for passion/companionship elsewhere, as you will end up biting the shoulder you cry on.
After a while, you'll be looking forward to Him going out to the garage so you can get on with your stuff, and at the same time both of you will have better times when you are together, because you won't be filled with resentment, and treat him with sarcasm.
Don't ask how I know all this, I just do...multiplied by 4!

MK9R - 11/11/02 at 08:37 AM

Why don't women do "hobbies" which take up all of their time? I would be over the moon if mine f**cked off into the shed every night!

interestedparty - 11/11/02 at 09:00 AM

My wife does embroidery etc while she watches TV. Neither is interesting enough on its own but together it's enough to keep her occupied.
She also pretends to listen to me when I explain the difference between a tandem master cylinder with bias valve to the rear, and adjustable bias pedal box.
I get some of my best car making ideas when I'm explaining stuff to her because the discussion process forces me to arrange my thoughts in a logical manner, and quite often that process will throw up a new idea

MK9R - 11/11/02 at 10:04 AM

Any mention of car related topic sends her off into a fit of rage and torent of abuse and nagging!! It would'nt be too bad, but i haven't even started the build yet, i'm still in the process of buying and refurbing the bits and organsing the plans!! Strange that the she seems to have forgotten about the 2 solid years of evening DIY and thousands of pounds spent on the house (Soon to be finished)??

David Jenkins - 11/11/02 at 10:51 AM

The only things my wife complains about are:

a. Bits of metal/swarf carried into the house on the soles of shoes; and
b. The smell of paint/solvents/smoke/whatever being carried into the house (the garage is joined onto the kitchen).

Apart from that, she reckons she's fairly lucky, as she always knows where I am of an evening!

David

bob - 11/11/02 at 08:36 PM

While i'm in the garage i'm out of the way, leaving Mrs bob plenty of space to play with the hoover, washing machine, cooker, iron and watch all that daytime television while having a coffee morning.

barrie sharp - 11/11/02 at 09:53 PM

has Mark H been back on line since the first post or did she really hang him ?

bob - 11/11/02 at 10:16 PM

I thought the rope was for her own use

tongue in cheek as usual

stephen_gusterson - 11/11/02 at 11:19 PM

Bobs being a bit male chauvanist, so thought this one might be apreciated....

How many male chauvanists does it take to change a kitchen lightbulb?

None, The wife can cook in the dark.

You may be pleased to hear that RachelH hasn't strung either me or herself up. I think it was written with her tongue firmly in cheek! (Just in case this missed some of you !

Yes I am now a proud owner of a bright yellow rolling "book" chassis. I think it'll need un-building to neaten up, smooth some of the welds, paint chassis etc, before getting back to a rolling chassis that i can actually start work on.

RachelH may find that she is needed to help lift engines, as well as all the copious tea/beer runs, before actually driving the thing.

A quick question if you please: Bearing in mind a "keen amateur" status in all things mechanical, do you think it's feasible to finish my car by the summer?

James - 12/11/02 at 12:26 PM

She's definately not alone in feeling this way- I nearly got dumped the other night by my girlfriend with my attempts at getting her to like me again being described as "too little, too late".

Then I bought her Vice City on the Playstation and she's happy now! Along with dinner at an expensive restaurant, cinema and spending all weekend with her and not the car!
But all seems cool for the moment... well, this week anyway!

But did you get a chuckle out of it - thats the important thing!

How long its gonna take you depends on how much work you need to redo on the car. And of course how much time you have. Keeping to the book is the fastest way to build, by my experience of doing exactly the opposite!

I have seen on lists at least one example of a car being built in 16 weeks. But then if you have all day, then 6 weeks would be possible.

steve

the harmony in your marriage might be inversely proportional to the time you spend on the car tho.....

chrisg - 12/11/02 at 09:21 PM

Mark,

You can have it finished by summer - just don't specify *which*summer!

Cheers

Chris

Mark H - 13/11/02 at 07:07 PM

Good idea Chrisg - in fact my neighbours are just about running a book as to how long it'll take me. I'll show them (probably!)

Stephen - yes I did like the list of things to do, cheers - however you mustn't have realised I was married when you suggested number 5!

Regarding time of build, it will probably also depend on how shite the winter is!

Cheers,

Mark

What's that got to do with it?, us hardy northern chaps laugh in the face of cold weather, into the garage in nothing more than a string vest and baggy shorts. Oh yes. when i was a lad......e.t.c e.t.c e.t.c

Oh sorry Mark, forgot your one of those S.S D's ,sneaked up north for a good pint.

Cheffy - 13/11/02 at 07:57 PM

Hello Rachel. I am with you, The old man takes on a "hobby" and all of a sudden it takes up all of his time and he hardly has any left for us, ( the women who have stood by them all these years, holding the spanners in the pouring rain). What we need to do is start up our own web site come on girls any ideas.

Anita

Cheffy - 13/11/02 at 08:04 PM

James,

In response to your post above, I have to say if it only cost you dinner out and a playstation game I think you got away lightly. 'Er indoors is off to New York in the morning with 'er mate for a weeks Crimbo shopping!! The deal was that whatever she spent on the trip I could spend on the Locost.
However the thought of my Missus in New York with a credit card is likely to give me a few sleepless nights this week!!!
Oh well, at least it should be a nag free week.
Now, if I can just get shot of me daughter for the week???

Cheers, Martin

Have you thought of withdrawing all the money, keeping it in a sock behind the drawer, and then reporting your cards stolen? That way 'er indoors wont be able to go mad in NY and you will be well funded for your build!

No chrissy present possibly tho

Hello, RachelH here again. Thanks for all the replys and I can confirm that my husband is alive and well and is not (yet) under the patio!! As for the girlie website you might wanna try "tippingthevelvet" i think it's called. It's definately a girls website (if ya know what I mean!!) and I would think some of you "boys" will be having a sneeky peek aswell!! On that subject, did any of you see Tipping the Velvet? And what did you think to it?

Cheerio,

RachelH

interestedparty - 14/11/02 at 06:27 PM

I saw it, thought the music was good, story a bit extreme here and there. I thought her accent was a bit OTT, all in all a good effort, though.

John

PS website referred to above is

Cheers

Alan B - 14/11/02 at 09:38 PM

Thanks Chris, saved me having to look

bob - 14/11/02 at 10:58 PM

I sat and watched a bit of "tipping the velvet" the birds pathetic attempt at a cockney type accent was a bit larfable though.

My only fear with a groundbreaking costume drama like this is what next?

Lets just hope it doesnt open the doors for a load of shirt lifter dramas eh!!

Cheffy - 15/11/02 at 10:11 PM

Yea, I reckon it could be well worth missing out on a Xmas pressie.

Cheers Steve, I'll get to work on it!!!

Mart.

Cheffy - 15/11/02 at 10:16 PM

Sorry Folks,

Above reply is in response to Steve Gustersons post at the end of page 1. Should have read page two first.....DOH!

Yeah, like this whole Locost building phenomenon. One day I think I'll wake up and find it's all been a bad dream, a bit like the day after we got back from Le Mans, eh Chris?

chrisg - 17/11/02 at 05:15 PM

I don't remember much of the day after - except the sunburn!!!

Cheers
