best wishes

in the same mathmatical vain im guessing some of you have seen this..... Rescued attachment Maths1.JPG

More crap maths

1) Start with the given: CUTE PURPLE DINOSAUR

2) Change all U's to V's (which is proper Latin anyway): CVTE PVRPLE DINOSAVR

3) Extract all Roman Numerals: C V V L D I V

4) Convert into Arabic values: 100 5 5 50 500 1 5

5) Add all the numbers: 666

Thus, Barney is Satan.

Also the on the attached picture. Anyone spot why its all rubbish? (Which step isnt right?)

some of those lines involve multiplying by zero - looks a bit odd

David Jenkins - 20/5/05 at 10:08 AM

Correct! Line 4 works out as 0 = 0.

David Jenkins - 20/5/05 at 10:44 AM

(a - a) = 0
so
a^2(a-a) = a^2(0) = 0
as the result of anything multiplied by zero is zero

and on the other side
(a+a)(a-a) = 2a(0) = 0
for the same reason

After that, the rest of the lines are meaningless...

Wrong...well nearly right!... Its perfectly legal in maths to have 0=0 (since a=0, a-a also =0, so perfectly ok). However the step between line 4 and 5 is totally wrong. You cant divide by zero (try it on a calculator if you like).

Before that its perfectly ok.

David

except it is possible in pure maths just that calculators have no way of displaying infinity and as it cant be measured is said to not be posible to do

flak monkey - 20/5/05 at 12:48 PM

But something divided by zero isnt infinity. Noone knows what it is AFAIK. If you can divide by 0 and get infinity then maths is screwed as 1=2. (there is a similar trick with integrals to prove 0=1).

I hate maths

The answer is indeterminate. However you can argue that the result of a division tends towards infinity as the divisors tends towards zero. You could also say "How many items of zero volume can I put into a box of fixed volume"

The trouble is infinity just isn't a usefull concept in real maths.

i saw a proof of fermats last theorem which looked really good but it had at least 2 maths naughties in.
I only found one my mate found the other one.

For any who doesn't know fermats last theorem states. "Pythagoras theorem has no solutions for any power apart from 2.

Really interesting topic with a couple of really good books on it.

on a similar vein you can never be charged with assault.

It goes like this
Before you can punch some one your fist has to travel half the distance to their face.
It then has to travel half the remaining distance.
and then half of the remaining distance
and then half of the remaining distance
and then half of the remaining distance
and then half of the remaining distance
Nd half of something can never be nothing so i never hit him

i therefore rest my case me'lud
