using compaq 3800 for sat nav?
skydivepaul - 2/2/06 at 08:43 PM

I have a compaq PDA 3800 266Mhz 64MB ram with a 128Mb SD card. I was going to buy a tomtom1 but have been thinking about using the PDA for the sat nav. I only use it as a posh calender and address book at the minute so none of the memory has been used up.
Has anyone used these for satnav and are they any good. I have been given tomtom maps for the PDA on a CD so i only need the cradle and GPS receiver.
I saw this on e bay linky.
Any comments or ideas would be appreciated

I use a laptop, Autoroute and a GPS mouse similar to the one in your link and it all works well.
I've not used it with a PDA but I've seen a few of them and it seems to work well

Lots of info here if you have not found it already

Cheers

Alex

I used to use my 3850 with a GPS jacket and it worked very well with both TomTom and Navman.
I used a windscreen mount as the unit is quite heavy and will break the air vent mounts.
I have since bought a Navman 520 because I found that I was only using the Compaq for GPS work and the dedicated units crash less frequently and generally do the job with less fuss.

Thanks for that, I'll be using the sat nav for probably 2 - 3 journeys a week as most of the time i know where i'm going.

I also use TomTom on a 3850 - works brilliantly.

You'll probably need a 256Mb card to get all the maps on though.

You'll be fine with that setup....

Just noticed the price is rather high - you might want to look on eBay for cheaper options (also self powered)
