Dunno whether you'd get a genny to do this mate, if you did it'd have to be quite hefty as the start currents on welders can be quite high.

a big one! At a guess, (since ive blown 13amp fuses with mine) peak draw is at least 13amps, hence around 3-4kws.

You can get generator/welder combinations, not cheap though.

on machine marts site, there is a 5kw generator for around £600. However, the petrol powered welder have 13hp/20kw output! Thats nearly £2k though. Maybe my sums arent enough.

A friend of mine has a 5kva one for his welder, but I'm not sure what size his welders is, it is on the big size but it's burried at the back of his garage so we can't get to it for a while

Am thinking of hiring a genny to get a bit of welding done on the car

I would say 4Kva would be ample.
But I'm no sparky
I will say I run a 150amp tig welder from a 110v 3Kva tranny in my garage. So if i can do that then surly you could get a mig to run from a 4Kva jenny
