donut - 17/3/06 at 08:13 PM

I must be getting old but i have read references to internet 'blogs'. What the hell are they? Why are they different to normal web sites?

My build diary is a blog

Are they built using special software or is it just a style of web page?

DorsetStrider - 17/3/06 at 09:12 PM

they are just a style of web page.

Basically they are just a personal diary that can be seen by all. Think captain picard's personal log just not so cool.....or interesting. (ok I'm a geek I admit it, but still not sad enough to have a blog)

HOWEVER for someone that wanted a build diary of their project I would imagine that a blog would be just about perfect.

Hope this helps.

Livejournal is good and customisable too. If i hadnt bothered building a website, i would have just used it as a build diary.

some are inspired, some are stories of what people had for breakfast. some of both types are worth reading.

there's basically two ways of doing it:

one is the livejournal/myspace/etc way of doing it, where it's all hosted somewhere else, all you do is register.

the other is the greymatter/wordpress/etc way of doing things, where you install some scripts onto your own web hosting that create the pages for you. slightly more involved but a lot more scope for making it look how you want.

my build diary is powered by greymatter, and at the time of writing is exactly how it looks out of the box because I haven't got round to changing the look of it yet.

This comment is small minded, but then I have a small mind...................

BLOG's seem to be mainly the preserve of those with (too?) much time on their hands..........................

more building, less blogging, jobs a goodun!

(he says typing on a forum)
