As the title says really, does anyone know what sized thread the standard camera mounts are??

The one i made for my dads now bust panasonic had an odd imperial size, 1/4" unc rings a bell for some reason. still got the bolt i cut down if you want to try it.

Gold coloured Ikea furniture bolts that you screw in with a hex key are the same.

And I'm also pretty sure the majority are 1/4 whitworth.

The correct thread is 1/4" Whitworth (BSW). A 1/4 UNC screw will fit, though not technicaly correct as the tooth angle is wrong (BSW 55 degreee, UNC 60 degree).
