Our fridge,(which does not have an ice box) and is about 5 years old seems to be icing up on the inside rear and its about 2" thick now after only 5-6 weeks.
It seems to be cooling properly still and not making any noise or smoke, but am a bit concerned its not right.
Anything I can do, or check , or do we just go buy a new one, as is the case with so much these days?

Most fridges have a drain hole at the bottom of the back surface - make sure that's crear.

Also, make sure that none of the contents are touching the back surface.

If you've got a suitable thermometer (or the fridge has a display or calibrated dial) set it to +4 degrees C.

How's that for starters?

It's not an air leak, it's an gas leak. Chek the system - gas pressure. (Sorry for my english

I would think that it's as Arthur says, a gas leak as the gas escapes the temp dosn't go low enough to trip the stat, but low enough to ice the evaporator on the back panel, if it was the stat that was faulty the fridge would become a freezer! can only tell for sure by checking the gas pressure. It's a deceased fridge I think.

First thing to try is clean the condensor (the radiator type panel at the back) just go over it with a vaccum cleaner with a brush end or a handbrush.If this is blocked and not cooling the gas it can give the symptoms youve given if its a built in fridge do the same but also make sure that the vents through the cabinet housing are clear.

If the entire panel at the back is freezing after youve done the above
its not a gas leak, if its only freezing in that corner and the compressor aint cutting out it is.

Check at the back of the fridge if theres a ball of ice on the outside around where the ice is on the inside the insulations packed up,bin it.

As conrod says check the door seal.

My moneys on a blocked condensor though.

Amost certainly a duff door seal i reckon, the warm air leaking in hits the cold surface and any moisture condenses out into ice crystals, had excatly the same prob with mine last year and a new door seal and a good clean of the surface it seals against worked wonders.

Well I measured the temp when I got home, and found it about 6-8 deg on setting 2-3.
I have no idea how you would test the pressure of the gas?
Door seal looks to be good. - The whole thing seems to be in good nick still, and it matches our feezer else i'd be less bothered anyway.
I wound it up to 4-5 and it seemed to drop to about 5-6
I've de iced it again.
Cleaned the radiator thing at the back, though it was only a bit dusty.
The inside is a plain plastic back, there is no cooling plate inside, there was no ice ouitside.
I've turned it up to 4. ill see what happens, wether it reaches temperature soon.......

Also had this problem once, check that the door is hung correctly then use a thin piece of paper between the seal and the fridge, slide the paper round the door. Any loose points the paper will slide easily.

It will be a bad door seal , i have to work on refrigeration plant at work and the majority of the time frozen evaporators are caused by damp air from outside entering the room and freezing on .
Domestic fridges are sealed for life and there is not usually any means of checking the gas content, it is metered in by weight when manufactured.
Make sure it is sitting level and check around the door using a piece of paper or thin card.

I cleaned and checked the door seal as described and it seemed ok, it suks or puls, quite well when you open it too.
I left it overnight on 3 which is middlke setting, an dfound the temp this morning to be 5 degs, which I guess s fine.
However there s a film of ice built up n the inside upper rer already and the motor never seems to be not running, nor does the thermostat seem to click and turn it off if I turn it to a lower setting.
I think its new fridge time?
