inteferance fit

i have to fit a bearing onto a shaft but the bearing bore is a full 1mm smaller than the shaft. is that too much for an interferace fit?

seems way too different to me?

Unless the shaft is 2 foot in diameter, i think it's too much!

That's not an interference fit - it's a doesn't fit

Quite right, no more than a few of thou for an interference fit.

I doubt you'd get it in with 1 mm unless you've a BIG press.

i ordered the bearings for my xr4x4 rear end from a bearing company.

i have 2 options now either get the shaft (hub bearing boss) machined to fit-favourite at the moment as it'll be free at work

OR

get new bearings, read expensive

If you don't plan on replacing the bearings, machine the shaft. It may present more problems later in the day re sourcing new bearings but is the cheaper short term option.

i bought 2 sets of the bloody bearings by mistake so i've got one set spare

i knew there was no way that the bearing would go on. 1mm difference is loads, its just that i've never done bearings fits and i wanted to check.

no prblems with machining the shafts though?

For future reference:-

Sliding fit is about + 0.001" per inch.

Press on to fit is size on size.

Interferance fit (best to heat component and or cool bearing to prevent damage) is - 0.001" per inch.

So 1mm to big would suit a 4 foot bearing!!

i have facilities to induction heat the bearing and press it on but the difference between the shaft and bearing is about 20 times too big!!

machining is the answer

what about sending the bearing back and getting the correct ones?

Seems to me these are the wrong bearings and you've been miss sold.

AS said. To make it easier to change the bearings later on id get the correct ones. UNless you can guarantee getting the same size bearing at a later date if u machine it..

BUT for a short term cheap fix machine them.

erm yeah, if you got it on the inner ring would expand so much it took up the clearances and it wouldn't rotate.

If you tell me what the bearing mfr and spec is i'll look up the right fit for you.
