Here's an odd question - does anyone know where in the UK I could buy a steel eye bolt with 7/8" Whitworth thread at the end?
In case you're dying to know the answer : the correct way to lift a Colchester Student lathe is to screw such an eye bolt into a hole provided,
giving a perfectly balanced lifting point.
I could make one, but I'm not confident enough of my engineering skills to lift a 1/2 ton lathe at just one home-made point!

I would try a local machine tool dealers, they usually have that type of thing.I would just get a decent 1/2 inch set screw and weld on an eye made
from a bit of 50mm bar bored out to maybe 30mm and 12 mm thick .Weld it using an arc set with lots of amps then let it cool slowly and im sure it will
be fine.

I was thinking of getting some 7/8" steel bar, making a thread at one end, and asking the local blacksmith to make a loop at the other end.
Welding the end should fix it.
Still not sure about trusting my own welding in this instance - the lathe is heavier than my Locost!

I looked at the second supplier - eye-bolt £7.48p + VAT... OK, not unreasonable. Went through the ordering and checkout bit... P&P £25!! Oh -
then VAT on the whole lot...
Don't think I'll bother to order it from there...

P.S. I just found another supplier who'll send one for £4.50 P&P. Maybe I'll go there instead...

If I had been at work I would have got you one from there. We often get several that fail the visual inspection and get chucked out. Would be fine
for lifting half a ton though since they are rated to 2tonnes as std!

I can't imagine that any modern works would have a 7/8" Whitworth eye bolt!
It has to be that thread 'cos there's a tapped hole in the lathe bed.

You would be suprised what we have laying around! Been on the same site for over 100 years. And still regularly have old products come back which are
over 50yrs old for a service and still need to be hoiked about on a hoist.
Anywho if you dont manage to find anything. I will have an ask around. Might be something laying about.
Either that or you could always make up an adapter to screw into the lathe bed, then to screw a metric eye into. Make it out of decent steel and it
will be fine.

I will probably have one at work. I'll check when I'm back in on Thursday night. I think there is one screwed into the top of the lathe......
Can't you drill out the old thread and rethread it using Metric?
It would have to end up around 1" dia thread - and I'm not Desperate Dan!
It looks like what I want is fairly common, so I'll leave it alone and get the right tool for the job.
