Ford Car Warranty - Simple Answer Please...

Hi,
A friend of mine has just bought a new Ford S-Max and would like to know how many years warranty the car has as standard. The service manual says that it has 1 year "Base" and 2 year "OEW" or Optional Extended Warranty. He didnt pay for any additional warranty when he bought the car but has been assured that it is covered for 3 years (except for the wear and tear items of course)

Does anyone out there know with any degree of certainty what you get free of charge and what you have to pay for and where does Ford Protect fit in?

Different dealers will offer different lenghts as incentive to get the deal. Best he phone the dealer who sold it to him.

From what you have writtenI would have said one unless the dealer extended it within the cost. It will say if the extended warrenty is included on the invoice even if it has been discounted for the same amount!

...But anythings possible!

Most new cars come with a 3 year warranty. This is often a 1 year 'manufacturer' warranty and then 2 years 'dealer' warranty.

The second and third years will cover less than the first year - certain consumables and some other stuff will be excluded - read the small print.

Yes I am aware of the common split between manufacturer and dealer but unfortunately it seems to be the small print which is confusing things here.

Look at it another way - if the car develops a fault in year 2 or 3, how can you prove that it is under warranty? Surely there must be some sort of certificate or something which you would need to present to the dealer?

I had a problem myself with a 2nd hand Ford KA a few years ago where I had been told when I bought it that it had a 3 year warranty but when I came to need a new power steering rack in year 2 I was told that it only had a 1 year warranty. I never got anything in writing from the salesman and he had left the company so I couldn't confront him. Also, my service manual said something similar about 1 year base warranty plus whatever extended warranty had been purchased.

Seems unnecessarily complex to me - with my SEAT dealer it is a straightforward case of 2 years manufacturer and 1 year dealer and the only condition you need to meet to get the 3rd year is having done less than 60k miles and having a FSH.

It should be all on there computer whats covered and whats not.


Ford used to give a book with the car explaining the warranty, not sure if they still do. Basically the level of things covered reduces over the 3 years covered,. In the 3rd year unless your friendly with your dealer u wont get alot out of them..

Your best bet is to phone the dealer and ask whats covered. Theyr all different. I used to get alot done that shouldnt have been through my main dealer as we used to give them alot of work through work and they knew me.

Hi if you phone ford customer services the will tell you how much warrenty you have I brought mine as a unrecorded damaged car and it turned out to have 3 years warrenty it was 6 months old result you just need service history
