New grasser ideas coming together
NS Dev - 7/11/06 at 12:02 PM

Well I was going to keep thoroughly stum but I can't, because it just keeps making me laugh so much!!

I just won the ebay auction for my grasser donor(s)..............I mentioned the Italian flavour on the chains and sprockets thread in the Engine and Transmission section.

Well that flavour comes from the fact that I have now abandoned the mini idea, as they fetch FAR too much money for a total rotbox..........

The new machine will be based on a Fiat 126, obviously fitted with the two Aprilia RSV Mille engines, and some extremely wide arch extensions, and fully spaceframed of course.

I can't help but smile at the idea, as its daft and should be a right hoot!!

I am not the first to do it, I've seen one before, and it looked so cool that I have wanted one since, but combining the idea with a pair of v twins which are much more compact than a pair of fours should make for a lovely noise and some great fun.......in fact I don't care if I lose every race I enter, I will be grinning too much

Photos will be on here as soon as work commences (which will be as soon as the 7 is finished off, next couple of weeks)

How much power did a 126 have as std, was it about 28hp?? factor of 10 increase to 280hp should be fun!!

Confused but excited. - 7/11/06 at 12:17 PM

OOOOOOOOAAAAARRRRGGGHHH!

iank - 7/11/06 at 12:20 PM

should be a beast.

23 bhp @ 4800

Sweet! Always fancied a 7 but couldn't face ongoing panel beating! Perhaps my view is a bit jaundiced based on our local contingent! I'll stick to replacing rose joints and arms when I get corners knocked off my 9. A full build diary with photies would be good! Good luck with it.

Whoops - Class 7 as opposed to the usual 7s talked about here! This was not a reference to my local Locost etc drivers

Have you got the shell yet?

NS Dev - 7/11/06 at 12:42 PM

No, picking them up this weekend. One is a late one with very good shell and nacked engine. The other is slightly later, with good engine (which will be back on ebay! ) but rotten inner wing one side.

I'll strip them both, remove all panels from the rough one and bin it.

Apparently there is a full spare set of good opening panels with the pair of cars too, main reason I wanted that sale, as there should be enough panels to do a season I hope!

Richard - I won't be doing too many big meetings with it, which will hopefully minimise panel work. I started in the class 9, and I am starting to lose my bottle with open wheels now, too many up in the air incidents in the first corner.

MikeR - 7/11/06 at 12:57 PM

Make sure there is plenty of room for other drivers ....... you know, tall ones!

When's stratford in 2007? Just want to make sure i've got the weekend booked out before something else comes along.

NS Dev - 7/11/06 at 01:01 PM

It'll be sometime at the beginning of June, usually first weekend.

How are you fixed for a bit of grasser build assistance then Mike???

3GEComponents - 7/11/06 at 01:24 PM

A more powerful version of this then?

A 126? With 2 bike engines? That's such a bad idea it is very, very good. In fact, I think I want one. If only I could weld.

of course - esp if i can get my misses to be friends with your misses then we can get on without me getting agro for not spending time with her.

About to start getting mechanical on the seven again

Do you want me to start practicing helpful hints, things like move it back an inch - it won't make that much difference, just hit it and course it will be strong enough.

NS Dev - 7/11/06 at 03:01 PM

Will have a chat with Bec!!! Need to sort out a meetup, got lots of car stuff to do and no time to do it!!

I can pay with drives of the 7!!!

uklee70 - 7/11/06 at 03:54 PM

I love the idea of a bike engine 500

I wish I had thought of that l

hmmm, who's driving the 7 - if its you that will be more effective as a threat. if its me, can we limit the engine to 3000rpm

Should i make a comment about your misses being called Bec and you building a bec ........... naah, maybe not

NS Dev - 7/11/06 at 05:02 PM

that one never occurred to me Mike lol

wait till I tell her!!!

Coose - 7/11/06 at 05:12 PM

Chortle!

MikeR - 7/11/06 at 06:00 PM

well i wont tell you what i almost said ...... ahem [blush]

hillbillyracer - 7/11/06 at 07:23 PM

There was two 126s in our local scrappy a couple of years ago. I was busy enough with my 6 but thought they'd make a great 5 or 7.
The thought of it is making me grin like a cheshire cat. V-twins will sound fantastic

NS Dev - 12/11/06 at 06:20 PM

Aha!

Fiat 126 x 2 aquired.

Spent £62 on a 1989 and 1990 pair of 126's

One supposed to be rotten but good for panels, one with good shell.

Rarely for ebay, this turned out to be a huge understatement, and the good one is absolutely MINT!!! The "rotten one" has 3 holes, all in areas being cut out anyway!!

So looks like I have a spare shell, plus 3 sets of all removable panels, and at least 4 flipping interiors, which have just gone on a big bonfire!!!

A good buy methinks!!

Now I just have to suss fitting 2 bike engines in 0 space!! lol

Peteff - 12/11/06 at 06:29 PM

Cut'n'shut them to make one longer one to fit the engines in the back.

MikeR - 13/11/06 at 07:05 PM

unfortunately against the class rules!

I had an idea of how to fit 3 engines in - but NS Dev is chicken

(which makes me something twice as chicken as a chicken!)

3 engines? lol, how would you hook that up?

NS Dev - 13/11/06 at 07:36 PM

same way as with 2 or course, just one more chain!!

[Edited on 13/11/06 by NS Dev]

MikeR - 13/11/06 at 07:39 PM

although i seem to recall suggesting to keep the chain length down hooking up the third engine to a shaft which is connected to the drive sproket on the 2nd engine. Sitting the third engine along side the driver (its a small car)

this would also have the advantage of better weight distribution.

Volvorsport - 13/11/06 at 08:09 PM

ok , now tell me 3 engines isnt overkill - wouldnt the weight start to come into play , and what about inertia/losses in the gearboxessxexxexsss .

ive had a great idea for a class 7 - im going to keep it quiet tho .

MikeR - 13/11/06 at 08:54 PM

bike engines - 3 engines = 420hp ish over 280hp and about what, 80kg heavier?

yeah ok, probably not worth it but it would be cool and you'd have a certain something over all those people with twin engine setups - one more engine

NS Dev - 13/11/06 at 09:13 PM

against the rules now though anyway!!!

Engine is 65kg 140hp

MikeR - 13/11/06 at 09:30 PM

pah - put a large box over it and claim its an traction control unit, when its used you get less traction

akumabito - 13/11/06 at 09:42 PM

hmm, so you can have 2 engines but not 3? That's odd.. well, couldn't you join engines together? If you'd have 4 engines, and join 'm together two by two, would it not count as having 2 engines? (560 Hp would be pretty sweet!)

MikeR - 13/11/06 at 09:46 PM

would seem sweet but having watched someone try to control a 600hp v8 in a BMW mini shell - its too much.

Funny to watch but not very fast.
