was driving home today and a loud bang from front of car, pulled over could find nothing wrong at first inspection, turned the steering wheel and was banging, set off back home at a slow pace and only made a noise on tight bends.

got home got the wheel off had a looked around getting my dad to turn steering wheel, then i spotted it one broken spring complete sheared.

been to local motor factors and new springs £30 each and new shocks £30. he said common thing now adays sells spings every week for various cars due to sleeping policeman.

i assume i would be better changing shocks and springs together.

2 weeks before christmas.


does any one know where to get an online focus manual?

replace at least both springs!

If it hasnt damaged the shock and it isnt leaking i wouldnt bother with them.. Id only change the spring thats gone aswell.

if its leaking you need to replace it,if not just buy second hand ones on ebay they are cheap you can get a full set for around £20 inc p&p(i done just one on my pals vectra and it was bad read bad the car was all over the road on bends.had to swap the other one a week later once he got paid)

i would always change spring in pairs
same for shockers
the ride height will be different for a start
causing all sorts of problems!
best to be safe !

I doubt you'd need a manual, Autodata says at's a 1 hour job to do one side, so I can't see it being a difficult job

Take a picture of a particularly bad pothole - send it to your local council with a stinging letter and make a claim for neglect of roads (whilst they are busy building speed humps).

Mondeos have a habbit of breaking springs as well, wonder where Ford are buying them from?

my Leon broke one too, did it myself, my arse is it a 1 hour job!

I could do one on my old Escort in an hour, they were cheap enough but I only did one at a time and it never caused any problems, they broke in the same place on the bottom coil as well.

well just replaced both sides including shocks, biggest pain was getting the spring compressors on, and did have fun on what was the good side.

never compressed the spings enough before undoing the nut lucky i told my dad to get out way as i undid it.

Yes, he was trying to use the rattle gun without switching the compressor on if I remember Spring compressors are better in threes as they slide round the spring and you get a bulge on one side with two.
