Ferg - 27/12/06 at 05:12 PM

I have one.

It's gone dark.

Is it repairable??

Have phone a few places they say no, but I figure that Locosters may feel otherwise.....

All advice gratefully received!!!

common problem with TFT's the backlight goes.

If you shine a torch on it you should be able to see the screen - to confirm its the backlight.

uneconomical to repair I'm afraid!

Sounds like the back light has failed.

Havn't found a UK price but they are around $10 in septic land so probably 10 to 20 quid UK. You may be able to import one though.

Google for "dell replacement backllight"

Seems on ebay though they are around 40 odd quid depending on model.

Forgot to add, most places won't sell you a backlight as they like to add 50 to 100 quid for labour.

Depends apparently.

Is it just a clip on tube or taped in one. Have a look around google, there is one site which has parts and guides:

Linky

Though as Scottc says, it can often be an uneconomical repair depending on if you can source the cold cathode or not and if its actually that, that is at fault. You may need to check the inverter too, but I don't know how to check that (replacement is on the lcdpart web site thought).

Ferg ,
I know even less than you about this but if it is of any use I have a screen which a little darling threw a pencil through giving it that seasonal cracked ice in the pond effect.
His mother says he's frustrated........
Its going through the storage process before it gets thrown in the skip - if there's anything salvageable on it that you want it is yours

Is it a 17" model (E173)
I've got one with a knackered LCD(got kicked!), but I think the backlight is ok. I see you're in Essex - bit of a trek, but pay postage and it's yours.

Thanks guys!

I'll take it to bits some more and see if I can actually FIND the backlight.

The e-bay idea was useful, I know what I'm looking for...
