trouble is Ive only ever been to western spain
and the ferry cruises seem to go to northern spain
anyone been on one
also whats northern spain like
any ideas tips etc

The motorway along the Northern coast of spain has some lovely views and you are able to detour off every few km - if you follow the non-m'way
roads you seem to get back to the motorway a little further along. Roads aren't crowded so driving is relatively relaxed.
Didn't spend much time in Bilbao except to walk round the park/grounds of the Gulbenkian.
NB the Plymouth - Santander crossing is about 24 hours!
Spent a week in San Sebastian in the 90's. V different from the Costas back then.
Weather a bit more like England and not many holidaymakers from UK.
I really enjoyed it and would definately go back, but if you want a med type beach holiday then you'll be disappointed.

We did the crossing to Santander 2 years ago with Brittany ferries as part of a package (Canvas). We stayed at a small place called Noja which was ok and great beaches for the kids. I'd like to return and explore further down the coast maybe Portugal even. Weather was ok for us but as mentioned before it's not like the med so can be a little cooler.
Yep, echo all said, if you go you've got to do Picos D'Europa (jagged mountain range, stunning views, vultures & eagles), fantastic roads. Do Fuente De, cable car to top of mountain in one unsupported run. Beaches are great, very few Brits, most of whom are more of the sort you would find on holiday in the Loire and Provence (4x4's, bit loud, but generally ok). I've got the Michelin maps & guide books if you want them - I've been 3 times, twice on the Santander ferry (not cheap - book a cabin or don't bother going!), the other I drove through France (Plymouth-St.Malo), staying in Pau on the way down. Thoroughly recommended; have considered retiring there. As said the climate is more temperate, hotter and more humid than UK.
