
Don't know if any of you guys can help me on this, you usually know the answers!!
I recently posted about changing a rear stub axle after a slight scrap I had with a kerb.
Changed the stub axle on the rear fine, also had to replace the bearing as this was stuffed. Fitted a new bearing, and the Haynes book kept going on
about NOTE spacer that goes on before the hub . . . this wasnt to be seen anywhere, and after fitting the wheel back on, it rocks only ever so
slightly, i've temporarily fitted to washers before the hub nut to keep the rocking to a minimum, but I'm not happy.
Anyone have any experience in this area on a 306? I cant find anything for sale or any other reference to this goddamn spacer anywhere!!
If any of you guys know the answers I'd much appreciate it, MOT coming up!!

Why don't you take the other side apart and see if there's one fitted. 
lol you would think that would be logical, but when I removed the hub this side, it pulled the bearing apart to the 2 taper bearings that make it up,
and I don't want to knacker another bearing if it can be helped!!

oh dear.
Maybe the bearing cage was damaged in the bump. I would just put it together as is. Haynes manuals are not the best for accuracy and it could be that
you have a later model that has the spacer metal incorporated into the hub anyway as a mod. If it works, nothings rubbing and there's the correct
amount of play then I see no problem.
yeah, I checked the other side for rock, and it doesnt move, the side I hit is now only rocking ever so slightly. I might just get another couple of washers and stick on, to try and tighten it up
I can't speak for all cars but most stub axles do have a bit of play and the reason the otherside might not have any play, could be that the brake shoes are a bit tight. Watch that you don't over do it as when you spin the hub (wheel on) it should make a few turns easily, if to tight the bearing might over heat.
As ex pug tech I can tell you that there is a spacer on some, but if it was missing you would struggle to get preload on the bearing. The drum would probably rub on the backplate too, the play is just slight wear. Have you got it really tight?
ive got it tight, but the hub nut is really near to reaching the end of the thread, as if there is something missing. I think if I did have this
spacer, it would solve a few problems, but there's no sign of it, and I'm unable to find one being sold by any company. I suppose the spacer
is just effectively a wide washer, so I'll put a couple of washers near the backplate and see what it does I reckon.

Peugeot themselves is my next port of call, however they are not selling small parts for the 306 mk1 any more, I wanted a suspension bush a month ago,
but they would only sell me the whole wishbone, ball joint and 2 bushes. Even though the modern models use the same bush!!!

I have a 306 TDI and there is indeed a fat washer which goes on under the hubnut. Is this what you missing?
should be able to see it on the other one without taking the bearing off although you would have to replace the hubnut

ive got an average sized washer on next to the hubnut, but I think what I may be missing is a spacer which is the other side of the bearing, near the
back plate. I think a trip to the scrappy is in order to try and find one . .

You used to be able to get just the balljoint if the parts person knew their onions.
The simplest way to check if the washer/spacer is missing is to see how much thread is protruding through the nut on each side.
