Low cost breakdown insurance
Humbug - 19/1/07 at 10:40 AM

I realised recently that I hadn't had a renewal from VW Assistance for breakdown cover for my Passat. Phoned them up and they wanted £85 for 1 year or £140 for 2 years.

I found this on Money Saving Expert:

http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cgi-bin/viewnews.cgi?newsid1094823518,14076,

and signed up - it's Auto Aid. It's UK only, but covers all the usual things: home start, breakdown fix at the roadside if possible, recovery/onward travel. £32 covers you and SWMBO (or HWMBO ) - though married only, not "living in sin" - for any vehicle. You pay if and when you need recovery etc. then reclaim it. Given what VW wanted, plus the fact that Adrian Flux charged me £42 for 1 year on the kit, I reckon I'm £95 better off!

Just got the poolicy through today and checked it to make sure it didn't exclude kits, etc. - the only slightly iffy thing is it says "you must carry a roadworthy spare tyre with you at all times" and I've just got the inflation spray can thingy...

btw, I did do a search on here and found another thread on cheap breakdown insurance, but I thought it was worth passing on the "Low cost" message again.
