Advice about Monterrey, Mexico needed!
alister667 - 21/1/07 at 10:47 PM

Hi,
The company I work for looks very likely to be setting up a plant in Monterrey, Mexico soon, and already it's becoming clear someone from my department is probably going to have to go and help set up test equipment.
Most of the other folks are married with kids, so I'm a likely candidate, and have been informally approached.
I just wanted to ask has anyone here been there, or anywhere in Mexico? What were your experiences? Would you say it's to be avoided or is it something I should be pushing for?
Bear in mind it'll probably be for 3-6 months or so.
Any thoughts?

Thanks

Ali

Down side; Those lovely Latino ladies have brothers that will cut your throat.

Up side: The tequila is cheap!

Have a great time!

Just say what you think then eh Calvin!
He does have a point though, if you have nowt holding you back/in the country go for it. Just look at it as a really long holiday!

It looks and sounds a nice place, more U.S. than Mexican. The only downside they give it is pollution. If somebody else is paying it doesn't look like a bad experience, even if it's not wall to wall babes and gay boys if that's the extent of your expectations. The nightlife doesn't sound bad, how much do you trust travel reviews.

I've already spent time working in China, US, Germany and France. I doubt this will be a once in a lifetime experience. Trust me 3 months by yourself in a 1 horse town away from home friends and family isn't quite as much fun as you make out.

Generally my attitude is to go for it, but I'm much more interested in finding out if the heat is unbearable in summer, if I can go for a drink and wake up with both my kidneys still intact, the local food will make my guts churn and the mosquitos will give me the West Nile Virus. This is what I'm interested in knowing in advance.

I spent 2 years in Belize, I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I went to Mexico a few times, the food is great, I also found the locals very friendly.
One trip I made was to drive from LA to belize city 3462 miles and crossed over into Mexico at brownsville and followed the coast road, again thoroughly enjoyable.
Have a look on the Foreign Office site about Monterrey.

In your place I would go without any hesitation.

Regards
Bob

Is it anywhere near Cancun?

And will you be there during Spring break?

If yes, I know what I'd be doing!

Oh, and don't get caught peeing in the street. Brother of a colleague did, while they were queuing for the border or summat, by the Police. The grief he got was way OTT and the fine was astronomical!

Cheers,
James

Go for it.....
I lived there for 10 years, Big city, all facilities, good night life, easy going chicks, (especially if foreigner) Plenty of things to do near the city, has a racetrack, and a lot of flights outgoing to Houston Tx, and Dallas Tx, USA wich are major Hubs.

I worked abroad when is was in my early twenties for a while, did not have company paying the bills.
But it was the best thing i ever did, give you a heap of confidence and really opens your eyes.
When i came back I had a total career change and took on things i would never have done before.

If in Mexico, make a point of explaining your not American.
As with a lot of the world at the moment, things could get a little sticky.

As someone once said "the worlds your lobster"

I tavelled with a mate for 6 months in Mexico in 1997 in and around Mexico City and up and down both coasts. I found the people to be pretty friendly and welcoming, particularly if you make an effort to speak some Spanish to them

Assuming you'll still be getting paid the same as you do here then you should find living costs inexpensive. Some places/people will prefer to take US Dollars than Pesos as payment so you tend to end up carrying a bit of both with you.

We had no problem renting cars and driving using our UK lisences, but it would be worth getting an international lisence. That way if anything happens you don't need to give up you UK lisence

I got the squits once which I think was from some dodgy ice in a drink. Usual advice of stiking to bottled water applies.

We did try surfing on the west coast (Playa Azul) on surfboards rented from a guy on the beach. Besides being rubbish at it we decided to give up on the 2nd day after being asked "did you see the sharks out there this morning?"

I would jump at the chance to go back and see more of the country. Volcanoes, jungle, mountains, praries, amazing beaches and welcoming people

Guys,
Thanks for all the info. I'm gonna let my boss know I'd probably be up for it, especially if it's during the winter when it won't interfere with me hopefully sprinting and hillclimbing this summer.
Cheers
Ali

You have got to go for it, I missed out on a chance to work in LAX about 25 years ago, as i didnt want to move away

think about it, move away from what, this country isnt what its cracked up to be
the weather is shit, the twits that run this country are twits, jade goody has a point ?
all my neighbours dont talk engish!

anyway , I might have signed the deal for me (only) to go to Lagos (Africa) for 2 years
with the possabilities of earning 5 years net money against 2 years gross here,
Its a bit of a no brainer,

problem is my wife and dustbin lids, dont know a thing yet, and they wont be coming

weres my passport ?????????????
