But you have the advantage of watching the ensuing balls up from a nice sunny beach! In principal it would work, however, it won't due to His Toniness.

You support a rush hour tax? Do you live in the countryside?

Most people who work have to get there by a certain time in the morning. They can't travel later to avoid congestion. The idea that a graduated tax by time of day reducing congestion is just daft. No-one commutes for fun.

Fuel duty is the best way to tax road travel. the more fuel you use, the more polution you make, the more tax you pay. Drive lots of miles per year? Pay lots of tax. Drive an 8 MPG truck? May more tax. Drive less, or drive a greener car - pay less. The time of day arguement holds no water.

andyps - 6/2/07 at 10:56 PM

Trouble is that at least 10% of people who try to sign up for the petition are unable to do so. See this link for more details.

You could almost think the government were trying to make it difficult for us to let them know what we think...

Calvinix, on this time I think you are wrong - stop thinking only about yourself and consider the wider consequences. It is only one of many things which could have similar effect, and one day they will affect you, but it will be far too late to complain by then.

I agree with fuel duty. They should have just put the tax on fuel years ago. This would mean that if people had no insurance / mot, they couldn't avoid the tax unless they wanted to travel. It would also take care of the chelsea tractors.

I wouldn't either if I was going to live where petrol is £0.54p a litre.

Totaly agree, I have believed for years that the easiest/best way to collect road tax, is to smack it on fuel. There could be no untaxed vehicles then, and major users would pay there fair share. It makes no sense that somebody that does say 3 or 4k a year should pay the same as the person that does 20+k. Trouble is this would be far too hard for those t**s pots in Westminster to comprehend. But if they put the tax on petrol they won't be able to see where you've been or how fast you were going when you went.
A tracker in your car will tell them that.

It's a sad day when cynics are actually right

Chippy - 8/2/07 at 12:02 AM

Like most things "Westminster" the tracker will be a complete b**ls up, anything even remotely looking like "IT" has always been a failure. The amount of money wasted by various governments, (of all hues), is bloody amazing, and the things they put in to practice as working, don't!!! I would lay money that some enterprising young geek will come up with some way of blinding/overriding it. IMHO Ray

suparuss - 8/2/07 at 12:35 AM

come on think about it! if westminster applied these kinds of policy that actually work then they would end up with a lot less revenue.
if its all to stop pollution theyed slap a load of tax on planes as well, this would work because less people would travel abroad = less polution but that would also equal less revenue for the government. its all about revenue at the end of the day, not being green or saving the planet.
charging for cars works because most people need them and have no other option therefore allthough it doenst reduce pollution it does generate more revenue which apparently stops the world melting. blair logic at its best!
bare in mind also that a fair segment of this money pays for our service men and women who at this very moment are fighting a war in iraq which ultimately secures oil supplies. obviously you need lots of fuel to save the planet because we need to use the fuel to generate revenue for tony to save the world! tony logic again.
i wonder how much fuel all those big warplanes and tanks are using, probably a lot so according to tony will be a huge benefit to his green/revenue plans

.

I know i shouldn't be smug, but hey i cant help it......

Don't expect any support when they increase the tax on petrol there, and when you are tracked everywhere you go during your retirement maybe this country will be too full of people and you won't be allowed back in - not my problem. My point is that it is by taking the view that it doesn't affect you so you support it is all very well until it comes time for something that does affect you but noone else can be bothered to support you that you wil regret your stance.

I agree that the governement is highly unlikely to get this working properly, but that is too much of a chance to take - unlike many other IT systems they have tried to introduce this one has the benefit to them of being a revenue generator and that often helps to overcome many problems...

andyps - 12/2/07 at 06:07 PM

I knew there was a saying which related to my thoughts on those that don't sign because it doesn't affect them:

First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out--
because I was not a communist;
Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out--
because I was not a socialist;
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out--
because I was not a trade unionist;
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out--
because I was not a Jew;
Then they came for me--
and there was no one left to speak out for me

At least 1,188,291 people have had the sense to sign it so far.

It's the thin edge of the wedge.

How long before there's a tracker fitted to the top of your head?

Impossible?

Ten years ago I'd have said this scheme was impossible. The fact is that we'll stand for anything in this country.

Anybody got that picture of the only speed camera in texas? you know - the one with all the bullet holes in it?
