Tintop problem - Renault Clio
benji106 - 7/2/07 at 11:49 AM

Hi,

my '98 reg clio has been playing up for about a month now, sometimes when i turn the key in the ignition it wont start, the lights/radio etc. all come on as normal but the starter motor doesnt kick in at all. there is no clicking or anything, and i have to bump start it.

It seems random in its descision to start or not, usually it will go a week or so with no problems then stop working for a while, but sometimes in the middle of a good week it wont start once, then is fine for a few more days or vice versa.

any suggestions gratefully recieved

Regards,

Ben

starter solenoid jamming, it’ll just get worse with time

total long shot and very unlikley but possibly bad earth on block.

next time it does it have you tried fitting a jump lead from the block to the earth on the battery. to prove if that an issue !

or if its a sticky sealnoid a tap to the stater motor can get you out off bother

Dont think its any of the above if the starter is where i think it is, my other half had this problem with here 1996 one and it was the solinoid spade connector. the starter on her car is right behind the rad so gets alot of road sludge and water on it causing the conection to corrode. Wiggle it with someone holding the starter on and see if it starts. i just pushed it on and off a few times to clean it up and it worked.

I did show her which wire to 'wiggle' if it didnt start when i wasnt about.

good luck

hey thanks for the quick responses, think it may have been the terminal as i gave it a quick clean with some wet and dry and it seems to have solved the problem, also gave the solenoid a good tapping just to be sure
