I'm about to buy a Davis Craig water pump and controller from Australia because they're cheaper out there. When I include postage I will still save just over 60 quid. My relative who lives in Adelaide has offer to sort thing out over there for me and then post it over. This brings me to the original question which is the best way to transfer the money to my relative in OZ

Paypal? There are charges obviously. Can you not simply make a payment direct into his account either at a bank or over the internet if you have internet banking?

Foreign transfer will usually cost you anything between £10-20. Find out who he banks with. If your lucky and its something like Barclays or HSBC or something you might be able to go into one of their banks here and pay cash in over the counter for free. Otherwise its a cheque/foreign draft (up to 6 weeks to clear)....or as someone suggested paypal. If it was me I'd probably go the paypal route.....Oli.

Check out money transfer via the post office. Usually cheaper and quicker than a bank.

I tranferred some money to my Daughter, (lives in Perth). And there is a charge levied by the Aus Gov't on sterling transfers,which I guess is collected by the bank. Dont forget that you will have to pay import duty to HM customs, and that's fairly steap, check it out first, cos it could actualy be cheaper to buy it here. Regards, Ray

Costs me £20 when I transfer money to my French bank account from First Direct - I think this is a standard charge for their transactions for any country. No help here but I try to take cash out from a machine when I am there and pay it into the account as that is cheaper.

Just a thought - have they got a credit card that needs a payment making on? If so, try paying that.

Will the vendor not take your credit card details over the phone? then your relative just picks up and posts it on your behalf?

Lable it as a gift and you may get away without duty.
