I am looking at mounting my Navman GPS semi permanently in my dash, so I need to install an external antenna.

Do I have to mount the new antenna in a place where it can 'see' the sattelites (in the windscreen for example) or will it see them through a fibreglass body?

Try it and see, I think that GRP should be transparent at the frequencys GPS uses, but best try first before drilling holes..

it will work through any non metallic surface.

though windscreens with a metalic tint like the blueish ones used by Renault hinder signals.

Thanks guys - I hoped that would be the case but I will certainly try it out before permanently installing it.

What about one of those nice Sharkfin antenna like on the Saab/BMWs...??
