Good thing too as on removing the cam belt cover the the damn thing practically falls off! Seems the cover was the only thing keeping it on
So all belts, tensioners and the water pump were replaced.
I thought these things were supposed to go forever... my pug just died. It looks as though the cam pulley has come off!!!!
I'm guessing it's beyond economical repair & I'm car shopping tomorrow....
It's the 1.9 dTurbo engine (Rreg), anyone seen anything like? No loud bangs from the engine, just vibration for 2 or 3 secondsthen no power.

Funny you should say that, just had my cousin (mechanic) look at mine tonight (306 2.0 hdi tho) because it was making a tweating noise like a bird, thought it might have been the cam belt tensioner, but turned out to be the power steering belt slipping a bit. Anyway, first thing he said when i mentioned it was "oh it ll be your cam belt pulley ive done a few of them on these engines" apparently there a bit prone to it and he said look out for metal filings around the area. I know mines a hdi, but he could have just assumed it was a d-turbo before we went out to look. Doesnt really make your problem any better, but i know ill keep an eye out for it in future.
Andrew it's the crankshaft shaft pulley that fails when the rubber damper becomes weak and creates a mettalic chatter.
My Audi A4 was souding a bit rough recently and as I was going to change the clutch I delayed the service a few thousands miles. Then I hear a slight
rattle sound one morning so I immediately book it in to go on the ramp.

My Bro's 1.9 D Turbo died the week before last - again R Reg.
Internal engine parts are now external so I think it's another one which is uneconomical to repair.

Do we think there's ANY chance that I've not totalled the engine & I can just put the pulley back on, retime it & drive for another hundred thousand miles....???
