Hi All

I'm still looking for a van / truck to carry my single seater and I may have somebody interested in my trailer so there's a bit of pressure now!

The trailer will need to carry the car at 350kg in weight plus tools, spares etc probably around 100kg.

It also needs to pull my 1000kg caravan.

The car is 6' wide (on wets) and about 12' long.

A 7.5 tone lorry would be OK as I have storage etc. but I'm not sure about the annual costs of plating etc..

A taillift will also be necessary.

Any thoughts?

A 7.5 tonner pulling a caravan will make it over 7.5 gross train weight, so you will need an LGV ( large goods, used to be heavy goods) licence.

If you don't need the motor to carry anything else the you can't go far wrong with a little beaver tail, and there will be room for a decent sized van vault up the front with room for a couple of wheels on the opposite side to the fuel tank. Plenty of ex breakdown stuff about.

I've got a LGV (it was HGV when I did it) but I'd rather stay away from it!

I've looked closley at beavers (haven't we all!) but I want something enclosed if possible. My single seater is also very low and I don't know if the car would get on!

Put some bigger wheels/tyres on for transport and take off the nosecone for better clearance.

The more traditional way would be to sell the caravan and buy a motorhome, fit a towbar and keep the trailer. My personal favorites are the old converted coaches, do it all in one then.

I should have been more specific! I don't want a motorhome - far too much hassle for the kind of holidays we have. A bus would be OK but, would be a bit on the big side and would cause storage problems.

My preference would be for a transit type box with enough grunt to carry all my stuff and allow me to take the caravan on the overnighters. I could just take the van on the local events then.

And a flat bed / beaver would be OK but I'd prefer to have a covered van which is a little more secure and a lot dryer!

Might not be big enough but is that the sort of thing that you're after?

Tim - I don't get PPC often - any chance somebody could give me more details or even scan the pages?

And yes, I've got an old licence - all the classes I'm entitled to drive are in roman numerals it's so old :-) And I've got LGV so I should be fine.

ERM in your original post telling me about the caravan being over 1 tonne

The other problem with a bus / coach would be getting it into some of our venues. It would never get around sawbench hairpin at Wiscombe Park for instance!

I think a Transit type will be a bit on the tricky side.

I’ve done the calculations and come up with the following:

MTPLM of caravan (maximum loaded weight) – 1380kg

Ideally, the caravan should be a maximum of 85% of the towing vehicle, so the towing vehicle should be at least 1624kg. The law allows the towed vehicle to be up to the same weight as the towing vehicle but it’s not recommended!

Combining the two weights gives approximately 3 tonnes. With my race car (350kg), tools and spares (100kg), I’m almost up to the 3.5 tonne maximum and that’s without any passengers!

And, I’d have to get a van that was very close to the 1624kg weight.

So, I think a 7.5 tonne lorry is my answer!
