Trailer axle positioning???
Avoneer - 7/4/07 at 07:19 PM

How do you work out how far back the axle need to go?

It's (will be) a single axle braked number.

It needs to be about in the middle of the bed but positioned to give a slight weight on the towball (50 - 70 kg)

I worked out the right position for the car on the trailer using a noseweight gauge from a caravan shop

When I built a trailer I made the frame then laid this over a bit of 2"x4" around the middle.

Parked the car where I wanted it and simply moved the bit of wood back until the nose weight felt good, marked the frame and this become the centre line of the axle.

When I use my trailer I have a bit of chain that goes to the front of the car and just ratch the back down, always sits exactly where I want it then.

Ta,

I knew about the 60-70ks ish, but there are a few of us going to use it - some with CEC's and some with BEC's ???

50s the target, i broke my jockeywheel last week cos the nose weight was too high - maybe 80-100kgs. De-threaded it. Id only guessed the axle point though. Dont get a cheap jockey wheel, and aim for 40kgs bec nose weight and whatever the cecs end up at should be ok. With my nose weight i could feel bad feedback at 65 even though it was a loaded sprinter pulling it.

So it looks like I'll have to build with the car on it - oh joy!

Longer the drawbar the less likely it is to snake.

Aim for 70 pounds nose weight
